Uninspired senior managment

Pros

Great co-workers, until they left for better places to work

Cons

Management is so unknowledgeable about the business that they constantly hire outside consultants to tell them what to do. We've seen every one you can name. Bain, McKenzie, Monitor, PWC, and others. They even had an initiative one year on "Innovation." And of course, Crispin Davis hired an outside consulting firm and paid them millions of dollars to run an "innovation" program. Be innovative, or else!!! In that program, of the ideas that "won," and were therefore funded, none ever came to anything. The one I was most aware of was quietly killed after about two years, having achieved absolutely none of its objectives and having cost a ton of money. OF COURSE all this was funded by cutting programs for normal everyday business. True innovation, either by ongoing improvement, or leapfrog ideas, is smothered, because management doesn't trust people with ideas. They only trust people with MBAs from a specific handful of business schools and then only if they have had work experience with-- you guessed it, those consulting firms. The senior management of Reed Elsevier Group doesn't know enough about the companies in the group to be able to assess the decision-making and leadership of the management teams for the divisions.

Great Company and Culture

Pros

It might be limited to the team I'm assigned to, but the culture is really wonderful. They encourage work/life balance. We all have mutual respect and trust; because of that, our team really excels. Really incredible team and there's no dead weight -- everyone really puts in 100%. I have had some really bad experiences in my past employment, and this is such a breath of fresh air.

Cons

It's hard to get a hold of someone in HR to ask about benefits and other things. You are directed to some video or read a document instead of one-on-one help. Same for being trained on their tech and systems-- documents and videos. If you are looking for fully remote (which they offer) and you're local BE SURE TO PUT IT IN YOUR CONTRACT UPON HIRE. It's hard to backpedal on that, and I wish I had requested it to be written when I accepted. Travel can be arduous

Pros

Paying job... can’t think of what else I got out of my time there besides lots of frustration.

Cons

Non-existent HR and management, no accountability for “long-termers,” don’t expect any guidance, growth or morale from this company. Methods are very outdated and I’m unsure where these teams are that are so appreciated and rewarded as you’ll hear on long-winded calls because mine was nothing short of the worst team I have ever worked on for the worst company. And oh yeah, I have never worked for another company that allows office theft, charges benefits premiums that they won’t prorate, and will not deduct for local taxes. Just horrible, horrible HR. There’s no “human” in them.
