Pros

The technical issues you will be exposed to and the people you will meet in trying to figure out a solution to those issues are on par with the top in Technology. Your knowledge will greatly expand as long as you are a dedicated employee.

Cons

You will be taken advantage of for being dedicated and hard-working. Rackspace does not pay for performance. If you are one of few performers while others fall behind par, do not expect to be rewarded with anything other than a pat on the back. Being the top vs lowest performer has no effect on your compensation. The internal structure of Rackspace is nonsense. They have techs on the same team working under different managers in two different departments. Nothing is unified. Many lower level managers have no pull whatsoever and they will just fill your ears will false hope of what they suspect upper mgmt is doing. If things are going well and seem to be getting easier on your daily job, dont expect that to last. Upper mgmt will come down with disruptive changes and say its for the best, then revert those changes 6 months later saying it was a learning experience. Plenty of entitled individuals working here and it shows in the amenities that are offered and the way the Rackers whine about not having more.

Friends and Family is not good company culture

Pros

Rackers for the most part truly live friends and family - which is great. Keep in mind that it's people who value people foremost that can live a value like this. Overall - being a Racker was a good experience. I believe it could be a good career for many.

Cons

Like any place you work - Rackspace is driven by the bottom line: money. I'm not saying this is good or bad - but it is a fact. With that as a priority - culture and people, however, will always be a sideline and not a headline. It was not sincere or truthful for a company - which is about profit - to say that they would treat Rackers they were laying off like friends and family. Although Rackers received compensation and "help" (depending on what you're looking for, it could be help or not) - it was NOT generous and NOT what true friends and family would do for one another. Again, that's just a fact. It would have been more honest to say - hey, we're treating this layoff like we have to in order to meet the demands of our new owner and our savings goal. We're doing this because our first priority is making the business succeed. That IS the truth, and that is how recently laid off Rackers were treated. Anyone who joins the Rack or remains should do so with their eyes wide open, remembering that this place in essence is like any other business.

Crumbling Company

Pros

Pays high base salaries.

Cons

Declining tech company with zero vision. Weak leadership across the board. Majority of the senior leadership have little to no sales experience and have were internally promoted from the support side, which translates into a disorganized sales culture with absolutely no strategy. For the past two years leadership has been promoting their new services around AWS and Azure but for FY17 have shifted back their focus back to attempting to sell managed dedicated hosting. Weak leaders hire weak talent. Trying to get things done is extremely difficult to the inept and lazy people they hire.
