An Overall Great Company to Work For

Pros

RailPros has a strong track record of merit-based hiring and internal promotions. It offers great benefits including a 401(k) with matching contributions; medical, dental, vision, life, short- & long-term disability insurance; and more. The company has a healthy culture that emphasizes collaboration, respect, work-life balance, and open communication. It has a strategic plan called Align29 that was developed using employee feedback and company leadership works collaboratively with staff to achieve the goals outlined in it. The company executives are down-to-earth and approachable; they make an effort to visit each office multiple times per year and get to know all the employees. You can openly express concerns to the executive team, and they will actually listen. The company has a high success rate with business development and has grown every year as a result. I feel very comfortable in my job security.

Cons

The company has struggled with hiring and retaining mid-level engineering managers which sometimes results in busy higher-level managers struggling to manage too many projects and mentor junior staff. Below-industry-average salaries are probably the main problem; the company is slowly increasing compensation across the board but still has a way to go. The company's rapid growth has at times outpaced the ability of its support departments like IT to keep up.

Pros

The company is experiencing rapid growth and maintains a strong focus on safety. There are clear plans for international expansion, and employees benefit from fair compensation and solid benefits. Opportunities exist for cross-departmental growth, and the availability of remote work options provides flexibility for many roles.

Cons

The company’s hourglass-style hierarchy can make upward mobility challenging during the first several years, though advancement opportunities are often more readily available through promotion than through adjustments in compensation. While employees who go above and beyond their core responsibilities may need to actively advocate for fair pay, the absence of a clearly defined bonus structure adds some uncertainty. Support from executive leadership varies, and with multiple lines of business, cross-departmental cohesion can sometimes be limited.
