Still living in a Spanish bubble...

Pros

- People are generally well-mannered, on the surface at least. - Some people are genuinely hard-workers. - Minimal micromanagement, they trust you to get your work done.

Cons

- At least in Trading, upper management from top down has NO CLUE what goes on below. This results in a lot of POOR business decisions, or decisions made solely to satisfy their doubts, EVEN IF IT MEANS TAKING A BIG LOSS. - Managers are working only to be in the good books of their BDs and EDs, in hope that some day, they will get the chance to be at their level. Everyone else are pawns to their personal goals, especially true for the sister offices in Houston and Singapore. - Managers who have ZERO KNOWLEDGE about a particular book or business line get parachuted into a position and start to impose their own way of working, think very highly of themselves as they are now in an 'authoritative' place, rather than trusting the existing team and learning the ropes humbly. - A very inward looking company. Everything is about Spain, Spain, Spain. Satellite offices in other parts of the world are there for show and there is no real trust, attentiveness or appreciation for colleagues in the other offices. - Rigid and inflexible, because nobody wants to think out of the box, or make a change when the same operating model has been working for the past 20 years. RVTs are skewed towards a HQ bias, promotions and bonus percentages are strictly in accordance with a fixed ranking system of experience rather than actual contribution of the employee, which is why people eventually leave. - Compensation is far below the market especially in other geographical locations.

Don't work here

Pros

Great, genuine people working in Canada.

Cons

Managed completely out of parent country, without any regard for Canadian cores or values. They have no idea how to manage Canadian assets, and take the 'one-repsol' approach to everything, which has yet to work in their favour. Layoffs occur every year, with along with new organization structures (which fail and are replaced each year). The only way to advance in the company is to speak Spanish, and to say yes to everything upper management says. No new development on the horizon in Canada. Extremely poor morale across the country.

Don’t work here

Pros

Good benefits, 401k match, work/life balance

Cons

There are so many. I wouldn’t recommend my enemy to work here. It will completely drain you and break you down to the point you are a mindless drone -strong bias against any non-Spaniard. There have been several meetings in Houston where I’ve heard “oh we need to speak in English” in an tone that comes off as annoyed. The expats often receive more recognition and professional growth than others -headquartered in Madrid with a large disconnect to the other business units. Decisions are made to benefit themselves instead of the business as a whole -every year there is a shuffling of directors and executives like its musical chairs. People are put in charge of divisions they have never worked before. So you never get a sense of direction or a fixed plan. Just as you get used to a strategy, it changes again. There are several knee-jerk reactions by leadership that are not good for business -since upper management always changes priorities and plans, you are in a perpetual fear of losing your job or not knowing what to do. It makes an extremely toxic work environment where everyone is for themselves and will throw you under the bus the first chance they get. -any management position in the US that opens is usually filled with an expat. If not, it’s one of the local favorites that seem to get promoted every year. There is also a preference for the legacy talisman employees. You would think Repsol was the one bought out by talisman with the amount of current managers from there. You will essentially be placed in a box with no chance of movement -information is treated like its top secret. You find out more news about Repsol externally than you do internal. Most people will hoard information and only give out a small piece at a time so they stay relevant in the company. It makes it very difficult to get your job done. -systems and processes are routinely put in place by Madrid without any input from end users. Often the new process is in addition to those currently in existence and makes work very inefficient. You will spend more time duplicating information and being caught up in processes than you do actual work. But new ones keep coming as Madrid personnel have them as their yearly goals and just want to get it done to check the box. No consideration for how it impacts the business.

Pros

"Good benefits and vacation package if you can get them to approve it, many people have vacation left over at the end of the year and lose it because they seem to hate when an employee is actually using their agreed benefits" "Good work environment, good location, clean" "Special treatment to Spaniard or Spanish speakers, Upper level positions are essentially reserved for Spanish ex-pats from Madrid, which extremely limits advancement beyond a certain point, resulting in high turnover." "Great working environment, great people, location and flexible hours, 9/80 for some groups" If you're in an especially understaffed group, you may be lucky to get1-2 weeks out of your 5-6 or vacation.

Cons

"They bring people from Madrid to tell US how to so our job, despite their methods frequently being outdated and ineffective" "If your are not from Spain then you wont have a chance for a career projection. Those upper/middle management jobs are reserved for Spaniards wanting to work in a foreign subsidiary to pad their own resume for advancement at home. Some of the legacy employees are incompetent and the toxic workplace allows them to continually gossip and undermine your career advancement as well. "lack of salary, professional career development" (in 15 reviews) "expatriate more Spaniards to drive the model" (in 15 reviews) "Very poor management for mid and upper management" (in 13 reviews)

Pros

Decent work from home policy so not much driving to be done. It is a job, it delivers a paycheck (very underwhelming paycheck at that). That is it.

Cons

Pay is low Upper management is extremely demanding, unknowledgeable and unreasonable The less people they have, the more work is required of those who remain with 0 changes in compensation. I don't mean that you ONLY take the workload left behind by people that got laid off, you will be made to do that AND then they will give you even more (unnecesary) work to do Preferential treatment, there is a buddy system that is unbreakable. It is either spaniards helping spaniards or legacy talisman helping legacy talisman. In the past few years (and I hear that this happened a few years back as well), they have enacted "temporary" measures to chip away at compensation, the changes were/are not temporary..... There are many more cons, I just don't have time to write it down because I am swamped with unnecessary meetings!
