A great school in a major city with great colleagues and great students

Pros

The students are excellent, and while the teaching load is considerable it is still sufficiently light that one can get serious research done. The faculty is *extremely* collegial, and discussions over lunch at the Rat are always a lot of fun. That said, Rhodes had a nimble administration that was able to help people identify and take advantage of opportunities.

Cons

It's higher education, so things move at the speed of a higher ed bureaucracy. That isn't Rhodes-specific, though. Advising is time-consuming.

During my time at Rhodes, the Urban Studies Dept. chair was excellent with regard to appropriately scheduling student employees and offering any assistance our group required to perform our job well.

Cons

Occasionally, projects overwhelmed the department's abilities.
