Working at Ross

Pros

they give a good discount -- 20%. they offer some benefits to full time employees, but those benefits are not very lucrative. other employees are very friendly.

Cons

very few hours, constantly understaffed, minimum wage, tons of work. never get off when you're scheduled, especially when closing at night. 6 hour shifts with only one little break. and if you go over 6 hours, you're fired. "i didn't know" is never an excuse -- even if they never told you, you should just magically know, right? supervisors are rude and condescending and never stop yelling telling you to go faster. hello, tell me HOW to go faster and i might be able to! certain employees seem to get preferential treatment.

Pros

Ross is a fortune 500 company and stock is doing fantastic. The company is growing by leaps and bounds. The company has a fantastic Senior Leadership Team. Great SVP, RVP etc. Senior leadership team is very tenured in the retail management field (research the individuals job history, you will find out) If you are dedicated and work VERY hard and hit your metrics, you will be rewarded with career advancement. A few things that make Ross Great: 1 - It doesn't take a college degree (yet) to be a Store Manager or even District Manager if you are promoted from within. It just takes the "Pure Grit" to get things done the "Ross Way" 2- The company is largely focused on succession planning from associates on up. There is a specific structure and core competencies that are to be studied and worked on with your Individual development plan. 3 - Company is always looking on how to improve and is very open to new ideas. If a new idea is taken on and implemented, it will result in compensation. 4 - Big focus on Great People and Reducing Turnover.

Cons

No matter what position you work in, the job is VERY challenging. The job takes a individual that has a great grasp on planning and organizing and time task management to succeed in the metrics your graded on. If you lack these two competencies, you will have a considerable challenge being a manager at Ross. A few things that make things a bit challenging: 1 - Labor is low - Must have a strong focus on developing your team because you need the best out of every individual you have scheduled. 2 - Frequent Unannounced Field/Senior Leadership Visits - Not always a "Con" but it does take someone who has thick skin to take the feedback and run with it. 3 - Managers are expected to be efficient leaders and not work on the sales floor (which is GREAT) but when things get down to the "niddy griddy" it does take a couple extra hands to get things done. 4 - With such a focus on Great People (which is GOOD!) HR Dept typically takes associate side of a complaint Vs. the Manager. 5- DM, SM, ASM, AS and associate turnover is High mostly due to VERY high performance standards with low payroll percent. (Job takes the best of the best from associate on up to survive and move up)

TOO MUCH WORK FOR LITTLE PAY

Pros

FRIENDLY CO-WORKERS and a paycheck to survive

Cons

Not enough help because of lack of employees, employees calling in sick, or lazy employees. Security told to be more cautious of employees stealing than the customers. Customers steal and can get away without anything happening. Pointless. Management doesnt care about the employees, just hope they show up.
