Some good, some bad

Pros

Good benefits. Great opportunity to meet people from different cultures. Overall goal of the organization is to do good in the world.

Cons

Silos, silos, silos. Management very old school. Newly promoted supervisors are the worse. Politics all over the board prevent the organization to improve quickly. New ideas take forever to be implemented and by the time they are, they are often too old. Some services are really overstaffed, some well understaffed and squizzed to the max. Some managers are just well paid administrative assistants to a director but still make way more money that they should. Lot of brown nosing.

Pros

Everyone is happy and caring: employees, management, "customer" club members, food service staff. Only at Rotary do employees get to know the mailroom guy and are on a first name basis with the cleaning staff. She keeps up with my kid's activities. Only at Rotary does senior management open a 1:30pm company meeting in the auditorium with, "thank you for taking time out of your day to come to this meeting. I hope you had an extra long walk at lunch, it's a beautiful day, isn't it?" The mission of Rotary is compelling and timely. Only at Rotary can you end your work day with a seminar on water quality featuring water-user Goose Island company with samples at the reception. Fascinating! People have a good work ethic and shun nonsense politics. Colleagues will go an extra mile to help you out. Senior management is respected, visible, unpretentious, and accessible.

Cons

Sometimes employees' niceness enables meetings to start late. This has been getting better in the last few years. Access to PC applications and systems is locked down tightly, requiring too much justification to gain access to tools that make us more productive.

Pros

Working for an organization trying to do good in the world. Rotarians are close to eradicating polio after a decades-long campaign.

Cons

Rotary is an organization of volunteers from around the world doing charitable work for the betterment of the global population...a noble pursuit. Supporting their efforts are a professional staff of more than 500 located in eight offices around the world. The volunteer leadership is highly transient, serving for three-year terms, each president changing the focus of the organization based on their individual priorities. There is a lot of division amongst various working groups and little cohesion. Sometimes blatant hostility.
