Good company that sometimes makes unwise decisions

Pros

Large company, lots of career paths, lots of locations. Financially stable. Leader in the industry.

Cons

Makes decisions on quarter over quarter profit and stock value instead of making wise, long term decisions that make business sense over the long haul. Think Toyota.

Pros

Always busy Decent benefits Presentation of upward mobility and incentives Corperate training program could be excellent, if used. Allows one to escape the desk and get outside.

Cons

This is a glorified rental counter position especially in PA. With only 2 promotions in 11 years from the PA area it became clear very quick there was never any intention of advancement. I received 2 days of training and then was thrown on a counter by myself. Was told 1 Saturday a month and went a stretch of 6 weeks solid working Saturdays until they cut hours. If you need positivity to survive the work day Ryder is not the place for you. You will never hear how well you're doing but they have no problem blasting negativity via large group email. If you are not part of the good 'ol boy network you'll never survive. Diversity and opportunity for minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities is abysmal. Completion of "daily" tasks was nearly impossible before they cut hours, making them impossible. This means that someyhing is always falling throughthe cracks so that management always has something to complain about. Counter employees are also harssassed about making 60 telemarketing calls per week. These quotas and their enforcement is not ubiqitous and Id see my that management NEVER once hit their quota, not once. Turnover is quite high. Warning: The training program starts as a 12 month program on your phone interview, then 18 months at your sit down interview, and then the final paperwork outlines a a 24 month program. Each step further along you go the training program seemed to extend. WARNING: at the completion of 24 months they demote you and reduce your salary by at least 6%. They've attempted to an intigrate an extremely old DOS system with modern technology which creates a a lot of double work and glitches. Your direct boss is based out of Pittsburgh and is responsible for all of PA except the Philly metro area and isn't allowed to travel during certain quarters.

Pros

Pay was strong out of the gate. It is a boy's club. If you are able to create a strong relationship with your superiors and stay in line with them, you can move up pretty quickly. Just NEVER disagree.

Cons

Management at my site continuously put employees in a position to fail. Any employee who raised concerns to management was fired or written up. I was regularly required to work 100 hours a week just to attempt to put my shift in a position to succeed. We hit productivity at 150% everyday for months working 3 straight months of OT (60 hour weeks for hourly employees). Management constantly made false promises for help and none ever came. When I raised concern to the site manager I was blown off. I moved up to the regional manager and was berated for being young, and told: "everyone is working hard." told I was acting childish, etc. Worst work culture I have ever been a part of. Every employee was on egg shells around the site manager, who was universally hated by the employees. When I raised this with his boss I was told: "Employees are like 10 year olds and we are the parents, if they are all upset we are going a great job!"
