Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We value insights from former team members as they help us reflect on how we can continue to improve as an organization. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed working with the students and collaborating with fellow tutors, as these relationships are at the heart of what we do at Saga Education. We acknowledge the concerns you’ve raised regarding pay, workload, and support. While we’ve made efforts over the years to address these challenges, we understand there is always room for growth. We remain committed to ensuring our tutors feel valued and supported, and we will continue to explore ways to improve compensation and provide additional resources to reduce workload. Your feedback about balancing tutor compensation with our program’s accessibility to schools is important. We strive to create a sustainable model that serves both our tutors and the communities we support. Conversations around these topics are ongoing as we aim to make meaningful changes. Pros

A lot of us come to Saga either fresh out of college or after short careers in other disciplines. We're attracted to the idea of helping underserved communities. But we're not teachers. We're TUTORS. Saga has redefined what "tutor" means, displacing a lot of the responsibilities of teachers onto tutors under the pleasant sounding label of "high quality tutoring." The result is tutors are now crushed under mountains of paperwork and training materials. This is what's driving many people OUT of teaching. And a big reason there are record low influxes into teacher training programs. So why would a company treat its tutors the way teachers have been complaining about for many years? Pay is lower than my state's minimum wage. But I was told this is OK because Saga Math Fellow is technically an Americorps "volunteer" position and tutors aren't "real employees." Even though we have more responsibilities and expectations to follow than many real employee positions. A woman myself, I volunteer for our local women's shelter. That job also gives a tiny "stipend." And while the work I do there is every bit as important as what I do for Saga, I have far more autonomy over my time and far fewer expectations I must follow. Being a math fellow for Saga is just too exhausting. I have nothing left to give even to my own kids at the end of the day. Unfortunately Saga is continuing the US tradition of overworking and underpaying educational workers.

Cons

Dangerously exhausting workload and unrealistic expectations for a very low pay job.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We genuinely appreciate the dedication and effort you and all of our tutors put into supporting the students in the communities we serve. Your commitment is a cornerstone of our mission, and we take your feedback seriously. We understand that the role of a Saga Math Fellow can be demanding, and it’s clear from your review that you are feeling the weight of those demands. We strive to create an environment where tutors are well-supported and equipped to provide impactful educational experiences. We are constantly reviewing our program for improvement, particularly ensuring that the workload and expectations are balanced with our support. Regarding compensation, we acknowledge the complexities and concerns around the AmeriCorps structure and how it aligns with your responsibilities. We are actively reviewing our program to identify ways to support better our fellows, including workload management, training, and other aspects of the role. Your feedback is crucial in helping us understand where we might be falling short and how we can make necessary changes. As for the autonomy and flexibility of the position, we hear you. It’s important to us that our fellows feel valued not only for the work they do but also as individuals with unique personal and professional needs. We are committed to exploring how we can provide more autonomy within the role while maintaining the quality and consistency of our tutoring services. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We are continuously working to improve the experience for all of our tutors. We are taking your comments to heart as we strive to make Saga Education a supportive and rewarding workplace.
