Pros

working with students, some autonomy in how you run your own site and manage your team. Lots of interactions with teachers, administrators, students and your own team. Lots of fun!

Cons

Unorganized, many last minute additions or substitutions (curriculum, testing practices, mostly academic based issues) throughout the year.

Pros

The students are phenomenal. Students are very appreciative that tutors are there to help them and find it comforting that they have someone in front of them who will not judge them. They really want to learn and be challenged especially when their tutor shows that they care. Teammates and the Site Director are always there to lend support when needed and are very understanding of the core mission of the organization. I was a little hesitant when I joined, but after a short amount of time I knew I made the right decision. It's great waking up in the morning and going to a job that you not only enjoy but are proud of.

Cons

Pay can be a bit higher, but the pay is much more than Americorps and similar programs.

Good Program Working With Kids

Pros

Interact one on one with students, form personal relationships, not have to worry about the demands of managing a whole classroom. You don't have to be an expert in education to do a service year here.

Cons

Very low pay and benefits, exhausting work with high potential to burn out.
