Pros

The benefits package was pretty good. I have a better one now, but I did get pretty good benefits while working at SAIC. It's a big company with decent stability, and great name recognition. I got along with my coworkers.

Cons

There was no direct mechanism for job advancement. Even the people that did advance within the company admitted that to some degree it was based on luck more so than achievement. Training was limited to the minimum necessary to get me working, without any real effort to do above and beyond. It's hard to inspire employees to do that, when their management is clearly not interested in doing the same.

Pros

Where I worked, the average pay for that metro area is far below a living wage, government contractor jobs are typically at least living wage.

Cons

You can be assigned a task that doesn't fit your abilities and you're stuck, complaining is futile. If you're more than competent, expect to stay at your oar, slave, because you aren't going anywhere; it's the incompetent that get to change jobs. It's too much like high school, the popular ones rise, everyone else is backdrop. No matter what a good worker you are, your SAIC manager does not have your back or stand up for you. Raises are miniscule. Again, your work performance in your job is nothing anyone's really paying much, or any attention to. The moment you make anyone else unhappy, expect prompt scolding about not being a team player.

Absolutely no management direction

Pros

The fact you don't have your manager hanging over your head all the time and micromanaging, and the lack of off-hour work is good.

Cons

Lack of goal setting and absolutely no communication from management. Would like to know what the point of having a manager is at my location other than to remind me of the holiday schedule or fire me.
