Pros

Bright people, collegial atmosphere, collaborative spirit. People are friendly. Projects are interesting. great work life balance. Flexibility in work schedules.

Cons

Part of the appropriations process (not self funded), which means that we are dependent on congress. Hence, projects can suddenly change based on congressional actions. Priorities subject to political winds. Promotion process is not transparent.

Pros

Less demanding than the private sector, type of work is very interesting.

Cons

Some management that has been here for a long time no longer have the skills necessary to stay current with today’s financial markets. Also, they are willing to pay well to bring you in; however, after that you can only expect to get 1.8% a year, which is pretty embarrassing.
