      Great small company that cares, offers a lot of flexibility

      Pros

      This is a company that truly cares about its employees. Management actually gets to know employees and is interested in hearing ideas and feedback. There are a lot of opportunities to get involved, as management highly encourages growth and learning. Many employees choose to stay for many years (myself included) yet we're getting many fresh faces in the door due to continued growth and retirements. There is a lot of flexibility which I appreciate with someone with small kids. The benefits are great - especially for a company of this size.

      Cons

      Honestly the only downside is my long commute to Bloomington, but that's a choice I make to live in the north metro.

      Here at SFM we are proud of the visibility many of our employees get from Management. Because our CEO brings his own lunch some days, he often is in our "lunch room" having lunch with all of the employees.

      Unique customer and employer focused company

      Pros

      Insurance can get a bad rap for companies that are more focused on the bottom line over service to policyholders. SFM is unique in how it focuses on service and doing the right thing for claimants to improve their outcomes. Employees are given resources and rewarded for show empathy to claimants. SFM Management is fairly flat and executives are well known around the company which creates a more open environment. SFM is very involved in the community with their charitable contribution program and the SFM Foundation. Employees are encouraged to support charitable causes and give back to the community. Flex work hours are offered and work life balance is excellent and encouraged Team members are expected to collaborate and take responsibility of challenges A very tenured workforce of very sharp and friendly people Outstanding benefits program

      Cons

      Dress code isn’t as loose as some competitors for non-customer facing days. Due to tenure and flat management, leadership positions do not open often. That is offset a bit by the ability to grow and learn.

      SFM has recently changed their dress code, and loosened things up! We have moved to a philosophy of "dress for the day". We trust our employees, and believe they are capable of deciding what is appropriate dress for work.
