Good people, toxic leadership

Pros

The people at SLAC are really fantastic. Some of the best colleagues around, and that makes a huge positive difference. The work done there is also really interesting and it feels good to support that kind of work from any role. Benefits are provided through Stanford University and are top notch.

Cons

The people you work with, and many (but not all) of the direct managers are good people who are just trying to do good work, and want to help each other. But the leadership of the lab are a disorganized mess. Internal communication is spotty and misinformation and confusion spreads as a result. A lot of employees there are overworked and have been for too long. Burnout is high because they don't support employees with what they need to succeed. I think they could change these things and be a really great place to work.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and feedback. We agree that SLAC has wonderful people who excel in their roles and are passionate about furthering the lab’s mission. As part of the recently launched Operational Excellence project, the senior management team is identifying areas for improvement, including communication, accountability, work planning and scheduling. We hope this project will address some of these concerns.

Pros

Wide range of engineering and scientific opportunities. The lab’s mission is unique, historic and profound. Some great people to work with.

Cons

Big Head from Silicon Valley. A lack of accountability. Many folks want to ‘coordinate’ work but not actually do any work. Cannot afford to live in the area, comfortably.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We acknowledge that accountability is an important part of building trust and excellence at the lab. We have recently improved and relaunched the Management Walk-Around (MWA) program, which creates opportunities for supervisors to spend time in work areas, observe the environment, and engage employees in conversation about ongoing activities. All supervisors have been tasked with conducting MWAs regularly to ensure more consistent communication and accountability. We encourage you to share any feedback or ideas with your manager or division/directorate leadership.
