Pros

Excellent science being done. Cutting edge technology including the world's first Xray free electron laser. In addition to the regular staff, there is the opportunity to interact with scientists from around the world that use the SLAC facilities.

Cons

It is a federally funded lab which means funding is controlled by government bureaucracy which drives lab bureaucracy which leads to internal politics. I think if funding were more secure, the environment would be much better.

Pros

World-class facility for cutting edge science. Staff from top to bottom are very knowledgeable and proficient making the most challenging projects a joy to work on. Very good benefits in an excellent location, with promotion from within for scientific positions.

Cons

Salaries are excellent for the field, but not fully competitive with the largely affluent area.

Pros

Low stress work environment on longer running projects. Lots of opportunity to learn about new tools/technology. Many knowledgeable people who have been working in the industry or at the lab their entire careers.

Cons

Bureaucracy and politics. Endless project reviews. Archaic business tools. (bloated/horrific procurement system that felt like it was implemented to report to govt. agencies rather than to serve function for the people who were its end users) Shift from a primarily technical staff, to a primarily office staff appears to drive a lot of dissent among those who were at SLAC when it was still an amazing place to work. Low technician morale due to layoffs.
