Pros

A center of interesting, world-class, cutting-edge research. Colleagues are world experts in their fields and generally a pleasure to work with. A great place to learn new things and to flesh out new ideas.

Cons

Management is a bit too risk-averse and short-sighted. Lots of good ideas are not pursued or funded for this reason. Employment is much less secure than it used to be. Starting about 2010, lab has quietly shifted from a very secure "just cause" employment status to a much less secure "at will" status. Job security is now no better than most Silicon Valley companies (lab management apparently wants to increase turnover to be in line with industry jobs). But SLAC salaries are lower than industry. Salaries will have to increase if employees are to be kept. There is a general sense that the Lab does not value employees as it once did.

Awesome and exciting science, lacking direction and leadership.

Pros

The lab itself was an interesting place to work. The science that goes on there is mind blowing and most everyone there is really friendly. I enjoyed being given the freedom to learn and grow personally and professionally. The benefits are stellar, though, that's mostly due to the association through Stanford.

Cons

Constant budget cuts due to federal funding, several layoffs during my time there and more often than not the hardest workers were laid off while the laziest stayed, usually due to having been there for 20+ years. Constantly being forced to do more with less. The leadership of the lab is hesitant to change and money always goes to the science first with little to no regard for the underlying infrastructure.

Friendly research groups. Cutting edge research.

Funding for research not always guaranteed. Continuous layoffs in the last few years.
