Pros

Fun work advancing human knowledge, working with smart people on hard problems is always rewarding.

Cons

Both academic and government bureaucracies stifle innovation, and upper management is often not concerned with what is actually happening on the ground.

Pros

SLAC does amazing science that truly has the potential to make the world a better place. The engineering feats they have accomplished, while decades old now, are still awe-inspiring.

Cons

SLAC, and especially LCLS is necessarily a factory where the product changes at least twice a day. Unfortunately, the place is not managed nearly as well as a modern factory would be. IT is worse than a joke. Business practices and engineering workflows are decades behind the times. The running joke in the hallway is "this conversation requires a charge number."

Pros

You're a Stanford University employee, with all the benefits that entails. If you work in a science area, you can do exciting, leading-edge research with very bright people.

Cons

Heaven help you if you don't work on scientific research: you'll be hounded by bureaucrats who don't like any idea that hasn't originated with them, don't know how to collaborate, have no interest in or appreciation of the lab's research, and aren't interested in two-way communication, only in giving orders. The new Director has his work cut out for him.
