A very toxic workplace

Pros

Working with kids is great, some of the staff are wonderful and dedicated. They are understanding about family emergencies and the like. The pay is higher than other similar organizations.

Cons

You're expected to volunteer a great deal of your time. If you're not part of the inner circle, you are expendable. Raises are rare and far apart, no matter how hard you work. Competent people are given more and more to do while incompetent people just skate by with no consequences. It's a very toxic workplace. It takes 20 times more effort to get anything done than it should due to bad management. In my new job, I've felt more appreciated and rewarded in a few months than I did with YEARS at STAR.

After School Teacher

Business Outlook

Pros

If you are going into a career teaching children it is great experience. Good for a part time job while you are going to school.

Cons

The higher ups really don't care about the part time staff which makes up most of the teachers. They expect you to treat STAR like it is a full time job and get upset when you have other commitments, but they will not compensate you or give you any benefits of a full time job. They only promote to full time jobs based on how long you have been there so there is little room for growth, unless you want to stay for years. Because of this, most of the directors are people who started at STAR as their first jobs, stayed there for years, and moved up to director. Just because someone is good with kids does not mean they are good at managing adults so most of the directors have no idea how to manage their jobs. Extremely high turnover with little to no training so the new people have no idea what's going on. They always need people so they will hire pretty much anyone.

Pros

Working with kids. I've been a teacher for many years, and the students that are part of the program are great. Wonderful students.

Cons

CEO is crazy and terrible at her job, she will fire anyone for any reason. You are completely expendable here - they don't care about keeping the employees happy. They will give you cake instead of a raise.
