Pros

Salk offers great benefits for their employees and they really try to emphasize living a healthy, balanced life with a healthy workplace environment. It's also very nicely situated directly above the beach and right next to the gliderport, as well as right by torrey pines golf course and close

Cons

Salk seems to find seniority, or time worked at the institute as the be all and end all in terms of employment. Many people have been there for an extensive period of time, despite seeming to be completely inept at doing their jobs, and it seems that this time is all that matters. I understand being loyal to your employees who are loyal to you, but when you compromise actual ability to do the job you were originally hired to do and just perpetuate a cycle of inadequacy, something needs to be re-evaluated.

Pros

High quality science, many talented, enthusiastic and competent scientists, availability of core facilities and support departments, sharing of resources and reagents, amazing guest speakers.

Cons

Like any research institution, it employs many driven, hard-working people that are facing extremely limited career advancement opportunities, thus competition and misery abound. Most importantly, senior administrative management does not even pretend to respect or care about the non-faculty scientists, who are the primary doers of science. The disrespect is manifested in many ways, small and large.
