Pros

Sandia offers a chance to work with really excellent scientists and engineers on important problems for the nation. The scale of problems that can be worked on is much bigger than can be done at a university and the problems can have a much longer term impact than are pursued by industry.

Cons

Important national security work is, by necessity, classified. Nevertheless, working on classified problems is a negative since it comes with many restrictions (e.g. no cell phones at work, limited ability to work from home, limited audience to share ideas with or get feedback from) that aren't present in unclassified work.

Pros

Great people to work with, Great Job satisfaction, Fair compensation (could be better!!!) , Great location... Livermore, CA. You are working with brilliant people who are dedicated to the research they are doing. This makes work fun, even exciting some times.

Cons

Great place to work, but if I had to come up with one downside, increases in salary have been slow to come.... Compensation package (insurance, etc...) have been getting worse year after year... I guess this has been the trend for companies for several years now, but it's starting to be an issue with me.

Pros

These guys are the worlds experts in HPC computing. The codes are mind blowing. Lots of C++. New technology. Not afraid of technological change. The modeling problems are unbelievably cool. Fluid flow, structural interaction, etc.. etc...

Cons

It is a little bit of that creepy 50's cold war thing. If you leave every where else will seem like a two bit operation. The corporate rhetoric is a bit disrespectful to employees, which is a shame, since management actually seems to treat employees quite well.
