Pros
• Company culture and values
Schellman adopts a culture where not only clients are valued, but it’s employees as well. The firm is quick to recognize employees for their contributions through incentives to include cash payments. The firm has a wide range of clients across various industries and offers a variety of services. Employees are encouraged to obtain the necessary certifications, paid for by the firm, that will enhance their careers. This ties into the “Quality Above All” motto that the firm stands by. I personally like the fact that there are quarterly outings where local employees get together to partake in fun events such as eating out, going to a Braves game, or driving go carts. Likewise, there is an annual outing where all employees meet to take-part in fun and meaningful activities. As a new hire, I am certainly looking forward to going to Orlando and visiting the many theme parks that are on the schedule of places to see.
• The role of quality
Schellman developed its testing methodologies to guide personnel in producing quality work. These are constantly updated to keep up with market trends, industry regulations, and to continually improve deliverables. This ties into the “Quality Above All” motto that Schellman has upheld over the years and strives to maintain.
• Employee benefits
Schellman prides itself on putting employees first. The benefits are amazing; such as having medical and dental insurance paid at 100% for a single individual, and a substantial amount covered for spouses and family. Furthermore, vision insurance is also substantially covered, and Schellman now covers the cost of lasik for its employees. In addition to health benefits, Schellman encourages employees to save for retirement via its 401k plan. It matches up to 10% of employees’ contributions. Schellman also values work life balance and offers employees 3 weeks of PTO, and a mandatory 2 weeks PTO around the Christmas holidays. In addition to PTO, employees also receive maternity and paternity break to bond with their newborns.
• Firm leadership and management style
Schellman has a hands-off style of management as it allows employees the autonomy to work at their own pace as long as the job gets done. Both managers and the partners/principals are approachable and are quick to set aside time to listen. Projects are structured such that everyone succeed. This means that employees are staff based on their skills and experience and are staffed with more experienced personnel to help in the development process. As mentioned, the firm values its employees. As a result, consideration is taken when staffing projects. If an employee chooses to be staffed on more local engagements, the managers with make a strong effort to have the individual staffed locally. Similarly, if one chooses to travel more frequently, the manager with also try to ensure that they take into consideration the individual who has expressed interest in frequent travel. The same applies for international traveling.
• Relationships with clients
As mentioned, Schellman has a wide range of clients across many industries. Most clients are repeat clients because Schellman maintain positive relationships with clients. In addition, Schellman continues to attract new clients. In fact, I have seen a spike in the amount of work available due to the continued growth. Schellman also encourages clients to complete a brief survey at the end of each engagement. This helps the firm to continue improving its services and to reward employees accordingly based on client feedback.
• Training
Schellman has a robust training program. It begins with each start class attending “new hire” in Tampa. There are also multiple webinars that are held throughout the year, in addition, there are multiple boot camps for employees to obtain certifications. These boot camps are at no cost to employees and personnel are reimbursed for exams passed. Moreover, there are bonuses for passing certain exams, for example, there is a 10,000.00 bonus for passing the CPA exams!
• On-Boarding
Schellman is improving its onboarding process. Recently, the firm has implemented a mentoring system along with a staff buddy for each new hire. Prior to field work, employees get the opportunity to travel to Tampa for a week of new hire training. During new hire training, classes are taught to include lessons such as the firm’s methodology, and soft skills pertaining to written and oral communication. There is also a 90 period where new hires are encouraged to meet with principals and mentors each month to discuss progress.
• Favorite part of working at Schellman & Company
I certainly enjoy working less hours per day. Since I started in August of 2017, I realized that it is the norm to shut down between 5 and 6 pm daily. Of course, discretion is needed, given the deadline of projects. I enjoy working with my peers and enjoy the fact that projects are adequately staffed so that team members do not get burned out or feel overwhelmed. I love the fact that bonuses are paid quarterly as this shows how much the firm values its employees’ contributions. Furthermore, the compensation is very reasonable for the efforts put forth by employees.
Cons
• Projects tend to have very quick turnarounds. Therefore, if one gets behind on work, this can quickly snowball into having multiple projects being worked on at the same time.
• There is no local office, so it may take month to see team members. However, the quarterly events, and annual event provide the opportunity to see everyone.
