Great Alternative to Big 4

Pros

- Comp tends to be higher for equal positions at Big 4 and/or other major consulting firms (includes quarterly bonuses) - Benefits are some of the best I've seen (10% 401k match, personal tech (home Internet, cell phone, etc.) monthly reimbursement allowance, etc.) - Annual corporate retreat for employee and a +1 (3 nights / travel and accommodation paid for by firm) - Ability to travel internationally, but only if you're interested (I've been to about 15 countries in 5+ years at the firm) - Firm transparency. We have "all hands" calls every 2 weeks where senior management and operations discuss any firm updates, including methodology, technology trends, financial performance, etc. - Open door policy with senior management (which actually exists). Partners are easily accessible / approachable by all employees, regardless of rank

Cons

- Akin to other firms in the consulting / client service industry, this isn't a 9-5 job. Be ready to put your time in to make an impact and move up the ranks here. If you're willing to do that, this place is for you as hard work doesn't go unrecognized and there's no "red tape" / "bands" preventing employees from being promoted who consistency produce quality work product. - (Possibly a Pro): high-expectations for entry level employees. You'll be in a 3 month training period where you'll be paired with other senior associates and/or managers, but after that, you're expected to be a big time contributor to our practice. - (Also possibly a pro): we have a non-traditional "office" environment. Service delivery personnel (outside of our headquarters city) either work at home, or are on-site at clients as we do not have regional offices. This provides some nice flexibility from commuting; however, if you're an "office person" this may be a difficult adjustment - Depending on your market, expect annual avg. of 50% travel (typically M-Th)

Work hard, play hard, share rewards

Pros

The people hands down - the best I've worked with in my entire career. If you like the type of work that Schellman does, you will never find a more concentrated team of experts who live, eat, and breath IT audit, security, and certification. The benefit of Schellman has always been its focus on these disciplines and avoiding the distraction of financial audit and advisory services. The result is the (to quote Chris Schellman) the All-Star team that has been assembled. Additionally, the management team has worked to listen and provide best-of-breed benefits for team members. Aside from 401k matching, maternity (and paternity) leave, and other benefits, quarterly bonuses is actually profit sharing as bonus pools are set based on quarterly income.

Cons

Professional services isn't for everyone and the pace here is fast. Many have noted that client delays can cause work to pile up at times. We don't hide this and the firm emphasizes constant communication across teams and guides professionals at all levels to push our clients (reasonably) to get the work done. The flip-side is if you just passively wait for a client to deliver, you will get behind.

Great Move from Big 4 to SOC1 / SOC2 world and Great Culture

Pros

- Great culture and great teammates, many former and like-minded Big 4 employees. - Work is heavily focused on SOC 1 / SOC 2 / ISO 27001 / etc. and no SOX audits for those looking to move away from SOX audits. - Firm encourages continuous training and certification preparation (provides employees with bootcamps for CISSP, CISA, and other certifications) and covers all exam related fees such as annual memberships, exam fees, exam study material. - Flexible schedule / ability to work from home / remotely when you aren't assigned to travel assignments. If you are travelling, the standard travel is Monday-Thursday. If you are requested to travel on Sunday or Friday (flying across the country or internationally), the firm provides a travel bonus. - Monthly Cell Phone Reimbursement. - Quarterly bonuses (some quarters higher than Big 4 annual bonus). - Good 401k match and the match increases each year you stay up to 10%. - Annual company outing with option to bring a guest complimentary (past locations include: Key West, Scottsdale, Orlando, Las Vegas, etc.) - No requirement for utilization / chargeability like Big 4 as this is all handled internally by management and resources are booked on projects over several weeks. This really lowers stress and time spent on administrative tasks. - Firm shuts down for 2 weeks around Christmas / New Years. - Firm pays for medical and dental insurance.

Cons

- With the majority of our work being external audit focused, the workload depends heavily on whether clients provide evidence and cooperate, otherwise, it can leads to delays and backlog in work for future projects.
