Pros

Scholastic used to be a great company to work for. They now have huge competition in the book fair division. They are now like many companies all about the bottom dollar. I was always a loyal employee but was let go for not meeting my sales numbers after 25 years with the company. My manager was great, as well as all of my co-workers. They lost a great employee when they terminated me.

Cons

some lack of communication between sales, marketing and operations. The next few years will be interesting to see how they fair against the new competition.

Pros

Good health insurance Nice work life balance Summers off (unpaid)

Cons

The amount of stress that management and corporate put on us is not comparable to the pay we get. The company is out of touch with current trends and blames the consultants for not doing enough when we’re not given tools to succeed. They have us borderline harrass schools and parents for more fairs and when they say no we’re expected to contact them a week later to see if they changed their mind. We feel like used car salesmen. Our pay is completely dependent upon a school’s fair success. If school is out due to snow, illness or weather then your pay is affected and you’re expected to make it up. It’s a joke

Pros

Began working 7 months and then 10 months with summers off; met some wonderful people and friends; pay for seasonal work was well rewarded

Cons

Once I was written up for suggesting to a supervisor an idea I had for a flyer she wrote. Note: she had just graduated with a B.S. in Education, where I had a B.S. in Business-emphasis Marketing, an Associate Degree in Marketing and had worked as a Marketing Coordinator for 7 years writing copy writing for a catalog and writing advertising pieces and newsletters. At my review, she brought up that I had gone to her making a suggestion of change to the flyer she wrote. I just kept quite and signed the review knowing from past experience one is not allowed to disagree with a supervisor and survive long term at this company without dire consequences.
