Pros

Nice people, the company is all about literacy and reading

Cons

Very decentralized structure, too many layers at the top for its size, don't invest enough in digital, the company can't make up its mind.

Good benefits, flexible hours but top management needs a makeover

Pros

I was able to arrange a 4 day work week and get full benefits, not many other companies would do that Company has a great mission - to help kids read, and help teachers stay on top of new trends and regulations (common core standards) Trade publishing has eye for talent - Scholastic publishes The Hunger Games and Harry Potter series

Cons

CEO runs public company like a family business - each business unit has its own P&L so there is a lot of competition and territoriality among the business units - leading to mistrust and tension. Every 2-3 years, there are major management shake-ups as the CEO thinks it will lead to change but as long as he runs the business this way, it won't. There is little opportunity for advancement unless there is a management shake-up and VPs are fired.

Turf war city

Pros

In theory, creating books for children is fun and pure and not at all soul-sucking. Plus there's an awesome rooftop deck with nice views of downtown NY. Great location in Soho.

Cons

Poor (nonexistent) marketing strategy from the knee-jerk school of management results in tons of money wasted on projects that ultimately go nowhere. Arbitrary and contradictory last-minute changes from several redundant layers of management result in late nights spent working to salvage horribly frankensteined creative. After awhile, you go numb and stop caring about producing your best work. What does it matter? It'll change anyway, for the worse. Turf wars abound within and without each department. Lots of favoritism.
