Pros

At Segal, the people you work with are amazing! They care about your success, and the clients. Work-Life balance is very manageable.

Cons

Compensation is not competitive at all, and they rarely do salary matching.

Pros

They are good regarding Flex-Time.

Cons

Favoritism. Those who are favored move up the ladder. Hard work is not always appreciated. Often overlooked. Not enough promotions for women until the last couple of years. Workload is impossible to manage so very often long hours are expected including weekends to meet to meet deadlines. Pay is not competitive for the lower and mid-tier. Management and officers get paid at a much higher rate. Wide gap in pay between management and consultants. Benefit package is just average. Could be better for a benefit consulting firm.

Pros

The office is in a nice location in the financial district and their PTO is flexible if you get all your work done.

Cons

The techniques used by the company are incredibly old-fashioned and you may not learn many transferable skills. For instance, much of their analytical work is done in a program called STAR which is written if Fortran, an obsolete programming language from an era before object-oriented languages like C++, Python, etc. The latest patch for STAR was in 2004 or something, like 20 years ago. Although they brag about having the largest database of multi-employer pension data in the US, most of it is locked up in unusable formats, so it isn't even aggregated in a way that allows for any sort of novel analysis. When I was there, management talked all the time about introducing stochastic modeling, but who wants to spend their career trying to figure out how to do that in a dead programming language? So it didn't get done. They got rid of the pension for employees. It used to be really good, and a lot of money that the company earns will go continue to fund the senior manager's retirement, and not yours. They will even train you to calculate what a raw deal you're getting if you work in pensions, haha! When I worked there, there was high turnover among analysts, especially among women, who complained to me about untoward remarks made to them by managers.
