Pros

Working at Shaw's is a decent way for a high school student to earn minimum wage to support basic entertainment like movies, concerts, etc. The work takes absolutely no thought at all, and that can be a good or bad thing. For me, it was a bad thing... but several of my employees were perfectly content bagging groceries, sorting bottles, and pushing carts, as long as they were getting their money. But really, you can't expect significantly better if you are just a high school kid looking to earn some money over the summer or on the side of school.

Cons

The management is horribly disrespectful. There is absolutely no opportunity to give feedback as to how things could be done better, etc. It's totally mindless work which drives a creative person like me crazy. I just felt like my mind was going to waste doing incredibly boring tasks. You have to deal with customers all day, some of whom are rude but most of whom are at least tolerable. But when you try to joke around with them and lighten the mood, the manager gets upset and tells you to "take your job more seriously" or "get back to work"--what happened to the human side of business?

Pros

Absolutely no one should work here. If you do, obviously you applied before you knew how much this company sucks, and are now stuck here.

Cons

Management is unreasonable, vague and lazy. There have been sexist situations and comments made within this store in particular, and management is unreasonable in their requests. Because of this, it is very difficult for people to feel appreciated, to feel proud about the work that they do, and it is very difficult for them to feel loyal to the company. This is further helped by the fact that there is a enormous rift between what management makes, and their responsibilities, and what lower level employees make, and their responsibilities.

Pros

Pay was fairly well above average for entry level part time employment (Started at $8.75 as cashier) Most managers encountered were pleasant and courteous, as well as flexible for scheduling around school commitments.

Cons

Most positions are relatively low skill/low pay, but that is true of the entire industry.
