Pros

Work is in an interesting space (low level systems) Coworkers are super open and helpful You get to own the feature you are developing on Lots and lots of database problems to work on

Cons

Career growth isn't talked to as much - you have to go seek it out yourself You end up owning features you developed on in the past which can overload you leading to a lot of tech debt Mentorship is hit or miss - you need to be proactive and find it yourself If you don't like databases...lots and lots of database problems to work on Higher churn than is ideal - team suffers a lot when knowledge with a senior employee leaves Weak retention of engineers - engineers seem to leave for competitors/other companies due to compensation reasons

Pros

MemSQL set out some years ago to build "the next great database," and it's happening. The product is rock-solid, and remaining gaps in the (very extensive) value proposition are getting closed fast. The company is fast-growing, well-run, and successful, even with many people not having heard of us. Also, the company has responded well to the COVID-19 crisis, the "new normal" of working from home, and everything related to that - even recent social issues. As MemSQL gets better-known, the sky's the limit.

Cons

It's an unusual management structure, with co-CEOs, no CMO, and a lot of new hires, most especially in Sales. So there are typical startup growing pains, and a sense of urgency that is both exhilarating and sometimes head-spinning.

Pros

The problems I work on are extremely interesting. I'm not usually very self-motivated when it comes to writing code -- I almost never work on side projects and I found most of my past jobs boring. However, the work here has kept me focused and excited. The engineering team is top notch. Every team seems to be filled with people who genuinely care about their work and are willing to help each other. Terrific work flexibility -- the company strongly supports odd work hours or remote work.

Cons

As others have mentioned, you need to be independent and adaptable to do well here. It's still a small company where things are changing quickly. I was given a great mentor when I joined -- but ultimately it's been up to me to unblock myself on my own work and figure out what I need to be more productive. There's very little micromanagement here, and I'm expected to hold myself accountable for my work. Long term business outlook is a bit uncertain. The big bet is that Helios will succeed in the cloud-native database space, and it remains to be seen whether that will pan out. The uncertainty doesn't really bother me (I care more about being interested in the engineering work) but it might be a negative for others.
