Good company poor resources

Pros

The company is trying to consolidate their systems and provide resources to its employees. Has a good financial status and is acquiring companies.

Cons

The company is going through extreme amounts of change. It is changing systems and there is some outsourcing being done so there is some downsizing going on. The management expects employees to take on a lot of work (and hours) without compensating them. There is resistance to some changes because of the us vs them mentality.

Awful management, poor morale, completely disorganized

Pros

You might luck out with good co-workers, but a lot of your bonding is over how you cope with working at such an awful place. The cafeteria does have pretty good food, though, and the building is nice. Salary is good.

Cons

Complete lack of concern for morale, IT is a disaster, there isn't one function at this company that isn't completely broken. There are a lot of people there who don't seem to have ever worked anywhere else, so they don't realize how broken it is. Frequent layoffs.

Lots of icing but the cake is spread out

Pros

As a company, Smith & Nephew has a glowing reputation in the community. The pay is fairly good to start, the benefits are good, and there is a certain amount of prestige that goes along with working there.

Cons

Communication between shifts is lacking; and procedures from one department to another vary greatly. Although Trauma and Reconstruction were combined, it feels like they are two separate companies. The atmosphere from one building to another almost seems like you're looking at a different company altogether. Sr management has made some questionable decisions in the last three years: at the same time they were pushing for inventory reductions in manufacturing and the distribution center, they build another (larger) distribution center. Also, they spent $15M on a nice showcase office building and empty lot when there was empty office space being remodeled on the current campus. The profit sharing/bonus system is different for manufacturing employees vs. administrative employees, a point not lost on those that work in manufacturing.
