Pros

I enjoyed working with the people that were there. Management liked to see when someone had a new idea and would help you to get there. If you showed initiative the management would like that. Co-workers were nice to work with for the most part. I butted heads with one or two of their former employees but overall enjoyed the company and the employees. Real positive place for the most part.

Cons

In my department they were not very flexible what time you came in a left, I would have liked to come in early and leave early. "It wasn't one of those as long as you get your work done, you make your own hours" type of places. Oh and if you start an internship in development from another department consider this your warning, its a Joke. When they assign your mentor, they will fail to mention it to the them till the week of the internship, so the mentor has no time to prep. Also on top of that the mentor is not given any flex time to help you out directly (So basically you are on your own with the internship. Learn at your own pace with no instruction seems to be the motto. And Moving up does not seem to be something in my department that they wanted to do.

Solid Experience, not out-of-this-world, but hopeful nonetheless

Pros

* Casual dress * location is close to major highways and avenues * Decent Onboarding/training program for new hires - even if you had never worked in a CRM before by the time training is done you'll be able to maneuver around the program. * Adequate Benefit options * Flexible with work schedule - can flex time if needed so long as I make up the time during the pay period * Co-Workers are friendly, reliable, and approach work as a team * Company values feedback and tries to implement changes based on employee suggestion * Most departments do have a bonus/incentive program * company offers profit-sharing/401k

Cons

* While the company continues to grow, opportunities for advancement do not necessarily continue to grow. * General Product or company-related feedback is often given through an online suggestion box where many times ideas are responded to but never really implemented- it seems like you need to be on good terms with an exec. to really be able to have your voice heard to implement change (otherwise, just posting ideas to a forum ad nauseam. Some suggestions are years old) * Professional Development is available; however job descriptions for other positions in the company are not available until there is a vacancy, so employees are unaware of what other skills they might need to be eligible for other positions until the time a job opens up. If you want to continually add new skills to advance your career, this workplace may not be well suited for you. * Communication and miscommunication - internally and externally - has remained a constant issue throughout my time at SofterWare and while leadership says it is always being worked on, the issue persists. (lots of TL DR email chains, non-applicable emails, google chats, communicating inconsistent information from dept. to dept., etc.) * Pay raises are not really that remarkable (read: minimal) * disconnect between executive committee and the rest of the company (exec team can be rather impersonal/detached when you encounter them)

Pros

Majority of the people who work at SofterWare are sincere, motivated and have integrity for humanity and contribute to the nonprofit industry, which makes it feel more like a meaningful place to work. There are many opportunities for one to advance skill sets in their current role, which makes you more marketable for future career opportunities. There is a lot of potential for this company to evolve into something much bigger then what it has achieved in the last 36 years. Quarterly bonus and yearly profit share is really nice and is a big incentive for why most stay at SofterWare. Changes in the last year have really set the tone for what collaboration and transparency means as a culture within SofterWare, so I can’t imagine this diverting back to the way it used to be when I first started working here years ago.

Cons

Years of service is valued more than years of actual job experience, so if you don’t plan to stay for a while, don’t plan on being promoted or considered for career opportunities….unless you are the small percentage of professional people who consider a lateral move a promotion. There is very little room for upward pay scale opportunities, especially in software development. Executive management hinders middle management when it comes to building and developing their teams, which in return explains why some middle management don’t have actual experience when it comes to business and handling employee personnel issues. Some roles are trying to improve this which is admirable, but if the executive team doesn’t come to terms with this, those individuals will probably just move on.

SofterWare Response

When I speak with people here at SofterWare, I always hear about how much they enjoy working with their caring and fun co-workers, (and how much they like the breakfast buffet at our Second Friday meetings). One way employees recognize other employees is with our quarterly STAR award (Special Talent and Achievement Recognition Award), which is given to anyone who has made a significant contribution to the company's success or has otherwise demonstrated a particularly outstanding achievement. The fact that employees nominate their co-workers for this award makes the recognition even more special and heartfelt. We are happy to share the success that you contribute to through your quarterly bonus and annual profit sharing contribution. Special tip: if you can keep most of your profit sharing in your 401K, it really grows over time! Thanks for sharing your feedback on ways we can improve. I encourage you to pursue job shadowing and stretch assignments to learn more about other opportunities within SofterWare. Or if you think we need a new position to achieve our goals, come see me and I will walk you through the process to build a business plan. Two employees have recently created business plans resulting in these new positions DonorPerfect Associate Product Manager and our Internal Training and Professional Development Manager. I will share your other recommendations at a future leadership meeting, and I encourage you to please come talk with me so I clearly understand your perspective. Kathy Piunti
