Pros

- Like many others have said, some people at Sonder are great and are a pleasure to work with. Mostly low-middle staff.

Cons

- Higher staff who are either rude, racist, incompetent or all of above. Most managers are hired outside of company and without HR or proper training programs, they are completely clueless. - Some GMs are extremely rude and even make public inappropriate comments on internal platforms, and when brought up to management, no one cares. You get shut down because you're not important enough. - Bro culture is real. Favouritism. Personalistic hierachy. Honestly, go find the first 30 employees of Sonder and ask them why they left. The ones that stayed stay because they're BFFs of the CEOs hence royal treatment. The ones who like the company are most definitely within this bro culture

Hi. As a member of Sonder’s people department, I’m reaching out to ask if you’d be willing to talk. It is not and will never be our intention to make our people - without whom we would not be successful - feel discriminated against, shut down, disrespected, or unheard. We would welcome and appreciate the opportunity to dive deeper into your experience with us. Despite Glassdoor telling us your an ex-employee, would you be willing to reach out to your manager, your HOD, the exec team, our VP of People (Melissa), or myself (Ella) directly via phone or email? Thank you.

Pros

Nice office, perks, discount on travel

Cons

They are not changing the world. They are just buying properties with VC money and doing a cheap remodel to look good. You find most of the properties on Hotels.com and/or other websites so what makes them so special....nothing really..so you stay in a local city and make the neighbors angry. Big hype, nothing special here.

Great people, bad leadership

Pros

The majority of Sonder employees are remarkably talented and hard-working (more on this in the Cons section). The real MVPs are the people doing the hard work in the cities: Hospitality Agents, Housekeeping, Onboarding Agents, Operations Managers, and Central Guest Services Reps. The majority of employees at the HQ level are also incredibly dedicated to their crafts. Sonder would be a fun and inspiring place to work if not for the senior leadership team (SLT).

Cons

You know a company doesn’t care about its people when it goes nearly two years without a Head of People (HR) and the CEO has open disdain for what he calls “nanny start-ups”. While not said out loud, it's clear the majority of the leadership team believes the success of Sonder is dependent on exploiting the hard work and dedication of the people that join this company. They may try to blame this review on COVID and the tough decisions a hospitality company had to make when the world screeched to a halt. No doubt the decisions to make cuts to the workforce must have been wrenching (just because they are bad leaders doesn't mean they aren't good people), but very little empathy was shown by Francis, the CEO, and others. The only communication about those cuts was self-congratulations at how quickly they acted and how much money those actions saved. Most of those cuts were to city and call-center staff. These are very close-knit groups. Talking about laid-off team members like items on a spreadsheet was tone-deaf and demoralizing. Once Sonder was out of the worst of it and the money from investors rolled in (more self-congratulations), almost none of that was reinvested into lightening the load on employees. No, they determined that all of us doing the work of multiple people could continue on - after all, we'd had success with fewer people, why spend the money to remove the burden on people working 50-70 hour weeks?

Thank you for your feedback. We completely agree that Sonder has a wealth of talented and hard-working employees. We’re saddened to read about other parts of your experience and want to address your concerns. While we were without a Head of People / HR for a period of time, we feel fortunate to have brought on an experienced VP of HR in the summer of 2020, who has been focused on supporting a positive and inclusive environment where all Sonder employees can thrive. The last year has been challenging for the hospitality industry, and that’s certainly true for Sonder as well. We hear you when you say we may try to blame your review on COVID-19, and we agree this is not a justification or excuse for every business decision. We want to acknowledge our response wasn’t perfect. With the lessons of 2020 in mind, we have updated our leadership principles and will soon be sharing a new mission statement, as well as clearly documenting our company customs, service principles, brand values, and commitments to all employees. To ensure that we deliver on our commitment to offering a world-class employee experience, we have laid out an ambitious plan for improvement with monthly milestones. We are also incredibly grateful to have welcomed many furloughed employees back, and have ramped up hiring to alleviate the workload of our teams. Francis and members of SLT have prioritized visiting our cities in person over the last year, as much as is safely possible, to make sure leadership understands the experiences of our front line employees. This will continue to happen -- likely even more frequently post Covid. We will also soon be launching “Day in the Life” profiles of individuals across the business to provide greater visibility into what it’s like to be on the front lines as a Hospitality Agent, Operations Manager, or otherwise. We hope these measures will help our folks at HQ make more informed decisions when making changes that affect the company. Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review. If you have anything else you would like to share with us, please reach out to hrbp@sonder.com.
