Ironic that a mental health company treats their employees so poorly

Pros

- The majority of non-managerial colleagues are incredibly dedicated, kind, mission-driven, and hard-working individuals. - A lot of the projects you work on are interesting. - Good compensation and benefits. - Generous unlimited PTO policy and a generally healthy work/life balance.

Cons

- Lack of job security and psychological safety: There is little sense of stability within the organization, and layoffs seem to occur without regard to individual performance. I survived a few rounds of layoffs and my manager blatantly lied saying that I was safe, but inevitably I was also laid off. - Promotions are dangerous: This is not a healthy environment to grow your career. In many cases, I saw employees who had recently been promoted getting replaced by new lower-paid staff. - Leadership and management challenges: As you move up the management ladder, there seems to be a growing disconnect from the core values of the company. The frequent shifts in project priorities and constant turnover in staff indicate a lack of long-term strategic planning. The financial and operational impact of this turnover is significant—hiring and onboarding new employees comes with high costs, both in terms of time and resources, while also losing valuable institutional knowledge and product experience. Leadership is getting in their own way of success with consistently poor management decisions.

Toxicity in Upper Management

Pros

Everyone I interacted with manager-level and below was truly driven by SonderMind's goal of providing accessible mental healthcare. Many of the teams were made up of genuine, kind, and intelligent folks that anyone would be lucky to worth with and for.

Cons

Upper management was extremely toxic and focused on the wrong things. Yes - as a business, the goal is to make money. However, that should not come at the expense of the mental health and wellbeing of the employees. The flailing upper management will be the reason whether or not the company will continue to exist if they don't get their act together by making better business decisions while treating people with respect.

Do not work here

Pros

You really can do better, look elsewhere.

Cons

Tried to sell themselves as a place to build your career with many opportunities, that's a lie. Every one who knew what they were doing left because management didn't want to hear any other opinions other than their own, and now everything's a mess. There is no growth opportunity, the company is not growing enough to have roles where you can get promoted into. If there is no need for a sr. level then you wont get promoted even if you do the work and have the experience. This is where you go if you are complacent and want to stay in the same role/salary with no upward movement in the foreseeable future.
