Started out great, ended poorly

Pros

The job started out great and was having fun working for a publicly traded company. There were nice incentives provided and a nice holiday party, but don't be fooled. The co-workers were relatively nice to work with, but not all. (as any job). Some growth opportunity, but took way too long to acquire.

Cons

I was laid off at the company , due to a previous executive making poor decisions for the entire company for years I was told. There were definitely others who sat on facebook or watched youtube all day who should have been let go before I was. You think the company is doing you good for a long time, but in the end looking back it was not. I was sitting comfortable for a while, but got annoyed that my growth wasn't moving forward, and if it was it was at a snail pace. I was excluded from meetings where I could have learned topics and knowledge to help my team, but was not given that opportunity. The mentality of the company was if you are not a white male executive you basically didn't matter that much. I busted myself everyday to provide superior customer service, but still never truly felt like it mattered as I wasn't able to advance. Do your assigned work and leave at the end of the day. There was demeaning characteristics towards women's looks and pornographic material being viewed at times and no one was held accountable. Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of people have been leaving or getting laid off from this company. I would look elsewhere to showcase and grow your skills in your career path. The grass is definitely greener on the other side.

Pros

The downtown Madison office location is great, especially in warm weather. The rank and file workers at Sonic Foundry are good people, and good coworkers.

Cons

It's a good place to work if you're a white male. Hardly any non-white employees, and it seems to have a problem with women in positions of authority. During its latest round of layoffs in the fall of 2020, 2 female VP's with years of seniority left the company. Female CFO also just resigned. New CEO is from DeVry University, a for-profit organization with a reputation for predatory lending practices and targeting veterans and low-income students. (I am not allowed to include an HTML link, but please read CNN story "DeVry will refund $100 million to students to settle FTC lawsuit") Company is trapped in a cycle of decline, retrenchment (attrition, layoffs, benefit suspension), and only brief periods of turnaround. No sustained growth. (This is a publicly traded company, so their financial performance is public record). Middle management practices Kiss Up, Kick Down management. They are only there to carry out executive decisions. They're unwilling or unable to address the concerns of individual contributors or protect their team's jobs. The company is shrinking, not growing, so there is no room for advancement unless someone quits, and they absolutely have to fill the position. Attrition is the norm - if they can get by without filling a job, they will, and the workload is spread among the remaining team.

Pros

Cool technology, still a small enough company so that there isn't a lot of overhead/red tape.

Cons

Madison WI isn't the most ideal location for HQ.
