Thanks for your review, and for your work guiding our Agile development teams as they tackle the technology challenges of the digital transformation of tax. As you know, Sovos is on a mission to Solve Tax for Good, and it’s no easy feat. The company’s core values, which you mentioned, are the fabric of our organization, and the way we behave to reach this audacious goal together. Our Scrum Masters are key to that effort, and I know that can require working outside of 9-to-5 hours, especially during busy parts of the year when a critical release is getting close to launching. While handling these issues is part of the job, if you are consistently working overnight, that’s not something we want. I encourage you to take time off when you can (we provide it so you can take what you need when you need it) and talk to your manager about other ways to ease that burden. If you have ideas, or if you just want to talk to me about this subject, my door is always open. John Landy, Chief Technology Officer

Pros

clean, extremely quite, free snacks and drinks

Cons

too many too list: no transparancy, rude senior management, stretched teams to thin, trying to hard to be a "cool" place to work, management afraid of conflict, little direction and guidance from senior management

Thanks for your feedback. I hope our office is clean and quiet, especially now – it’s been 11 months since we made the transition to remote work due to COVID. But since I was hired during the pandemic – I’ve never physically seen the Boston office. But it seems your relationship with management is what really formed your opinion of Sovos, and I’m sorry that it isn’t a great one. We hold our leaders to a high standard, measuring them against a set of competencies that align with Sovos’ core values. If someone was falling short, especially in a way that came across as rude, I wish you had brought it to someone’s attention while you were here. It does sound, though, that one of the things that you didn’t love about our managers is something that a good number of our employees really value – and that is autonomy. We give our employees a lot of training and access to the tools, resources and people they need to be successful, and then we let them do their jobs. There isn’t a lot of micromanagement at Sovos – and that is something most people love. But we know not everyone thrives in this type of environment – and that’s OK. We aren’t the best fit for everyone, and it sounds like we weren’t the best place for you. We do wish you the best of luck finding that place – and we are appreciative of the time that you did spend here. Terry Melnik, General Manager, SUT

Pros

Unlimited pto, unlimited Soda and seltzer water

Cons

Not a great job to start your career. Will close far more doors than the job will open. Not really a job that requires a law degree. Office location in Wilmington is absurdly depressing even with the renovation

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Our regulatory counsel roles are unique in that they are not traditional career paths for practicing law. As we stress in these job postings, “Great fits for this role: sharp legal minds who have a love for legal research. Not so great fits for this role: lawyers who are interested in trial law (there's no jury here!) or folks who are interested in being part of an internal corporate legal team. We have a team like that at Sovos; this is not it.” We do our best to make this clear, right from the start, before anyone considers applying. Recruiters and hiring managers also share more about the role and its responsibilities with interested candidates. If you were applying to this role to open doors to a traditional career in law – this was never going to be the right choice. Perhaps the mismatch on your career goals affected your other experiences. Your feedback about our office space and tagline, for example, doesn’t match the consistent feedback we hear – both directly and from anonymous survey results. (As you know, Sovos sends an employee engagement survey every year to collect insights into how our employees feel.) Our employee net promoter score, which indicates how many people would recommend working here, increased more than 20% in the past year. And we are proud of the fact that as a for profit company, Sovos can (and does!) affect the greater good. When we say Solve Tax for Good, we’re serious about what that means for helping businesses prosper and communities thrive. Our technology and services support efforts to close tax gaps around the world, our leadership prioritizes helping employees grow professionally and improve their way of life, and our employees take us up on benefits like charitable matching and more. Recognizing this role did not fit your goals, I hope you have found a career path that does. I wish you all the best. Pawel Smolarkiewicz, VP, Chief Product Officer
