You learn a lot about whatever you are doing -cigars, spirits, beer, etc. You also work with some great people.

Cons

Upper management, beyond the district managers, doesn't really trust their sales people to think much. As such, there is a lot of information that would be useful in regard to product margins and things of that nature that you are not allowed to know. It's mostly "push this because we say so." Also, once you hit store manager, there is very, very little room for advancement, and advancing being assistant store manager may mean moving to a new store in the middle of nowhere.
