Pros

Fun company trappings. Free lunches, company activities. The culture looks good on the surface, but it's all smoke and mirrors.

Cons

Caustic environment run as fiefdoms. Stunted emotional growth in the C Suite. If you have to deal with anyone from the founding team, don't work there.

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the time you spent at Spokeo and your thoughts in sharing your experience. In a company of our size, there are only so many things the company can work on, and ideas and projects need to get prioritized. We understand it’s frustrating if you don’t see your projects or ideas actively worked on, but that didn’t mean that your ideas were unimportant or not listened to. We know there are a lot of areas where we can improve, and we’re committed to tackling them as soon as we can while we juggle all of the rest of the business priorities.

Pros

- food - parking - perks (they wouldn't be able to keep employees without these)

Cons

The biggest issue I had working for this company is that I felt like I was conning people every day. I only lasted 4 months because I hated this job so much I would cry on my commute to and from. The product does not work and this company makes its money by tricking its online users into signing up for $20-40/month subscriptions through sneaky fine print (after charging about a dollar to do something like look up a phone number). The information is hardly ever accurate. I looked up dozens of people I knew in my down time and it was never correct. The customer care department is actually a loss prevention department. Management coached us and even had us take classes on how to manipulate "customers" into accepting the least amount of refund possible even when customers had NEVER used the product after being charged $20/month for YEARS. Prizes were given on a regular basis to CC reps who authorized the least amount of refunds. It felt disgusting and dishonest. I couldn't work somewhere when I couldn't stand by the product/service. Customer care reps are expected to answer at least 50 calls per day (I remember doing about 70), 90% of which are from people who have been unexpectedly signed up for a subscription and are rightfully angry about it. I'm not sure if this is still the standard but when I was there customers had to ask for a refund 3 times before we were allowed to offer one. All in all one of the worst, if not the worst, jobs I've ever had.

Thank you for the feedback. Spokeo as a company is focused on transparency. From sharing regular financial updates with employees, to providing the freshest and most accurate data available to educate customers, we aim to practice and provide transparency. Please note that our support team never says anything that is untrue to our customers. Our products are sold as a subscription and we work to make sure that customers are aware of our pricing model. We are also implementing new product features and elements that will provide an even deeper value for this monthly subscription, in addition to more transparency. We appreciate your time spent helping any customers who were previously confused about this model. Our current team is focused on educating and helping our customers have the best product experience and handle any billing or other support inquiries.

Pros

Catered lunch, 401k, medical benefits, and unlimited snacks

Cons

Spokeo may look like a hip startup at first, but don't be fooled by the "perks" that they offer. There's a reason why Spokeo has more people in their "Culture team" than in some product teams. They have to try hard to make it appear as if the company actually cares for its employees by organizing events and having random treats for employees from time to time. Employees in all departments are leaving so fast they can barely fill up the vacant positions that are open and that's a big red flag. The company has no real direction in terms of what they want to do with their products. Prepare to spend years (if you can tolerate these people for that long) wasting time building things that you know could be better but will never be. Everything is highly disorganized, and team leads focus more on trying to please the founders instead of listening to valid suggestions and recommendations from their teams. There's no real focus on how to make their products better in and out, no real efforts to do user research and do some real analytics. Everything is based on the whims of the CEO (who wants to put cute things on everything even if it's inappropriate) and the incredibly incompetent but power-hungry wife of the CTO. The founders, especially the CTO, have convinced themselves that they are the best and everyone else's ideas and methods are inferior compared to theirs. There's no upward mobility in Spokeo unless you have a relationship with the founders either by blood or marriage. If you're either of those, then expect to go from being intern to having a leadership position in a short amount of time, regardless of how grossly incompetent you are. If you don't have any connections to the founders, then you're out of luck.
