Good Place to Work

Pros

Great staff with good camaraderie between nurses, doctors and other staff. There are lots of opportunities to explore different areas of nursing through floating to other units or picking up shifts on other units. The hospital also offers tuition reimbursement and has deals with some educational institutions in the area. Troy is located in Upstate N.Y's "Capital District." There is a lot to do with easy access to NYC, Boston, the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, among other things.

Cons

The hospital is chronically short staffed in all areas, including nursing. Several hospitals in the area have there inpatient beds either reduced or eliminated, even as the population being served is growing. This is putting a lot of pressure on the remaining hospitals and their staff. The License Practical Nurse (LPN) position was discontinued and this has had a detrimental effect. Current nurse to patient ratios make it difficult to do your best job.

Classic case of underpaid, undervalued employees

Pros

There are many jobs available in the SPHP network, across plenty of disciplines.

Cons

The pay rate is absolutely abysmal. Even with a college degree, you're guaranteed to make pennies. There is a culture of poor management and unprofessional-ism across the board in all the facilities attached to SPHP. The cooperation is owned by a company based in Michigan and recently an entire department in my hospital was laid off. They were given the option to relocate to Michigan or lose their jobs completely, many of these people had been employees for over 10 years. I'd warn my fellow recent grads to avoid SPHP at all costs.
