Is Stanford Still Non-Profit?

Pros

Decent benefits program; especially tuition refund for children of employees.

Cons

Highly bureaucratic structure with poor managerial team. Stanford is a non-profit institution whose primary product is education. There is an effort to convert institution into a "for-profit" model supposedly for efficiency. In the process, it is losing creativity, intellectual vitality, and most importantly, it's sense of humanity. Chasing the political winds, using punitive rather than motivation incentives, and overly focusing on monetary goals are making the institution less prestigious. It is also ruining the academic culture of exchange and instilling a climate of fear instead. Founder Mrs. Stanford would be aghast and not recognize her own intentions given how the institution has evolved.

Pros

Good benefits, especially if you have children in college, because of the tuition benefit. The setting is nice, and many of the people who work here are interesting and a pleasure to work with.

Cons

Too conservative, and insufficient resources for staff to work efficiently. This department feels overly hierarchical, which leads to the management receiving only a limited view of what goes on.

Pros

- Campus is a nice place to work with easy access to downtown PA using the free shuttle. - Benefits are good especially the 403b match - Access to new technology - In my role, I was able to pick the projects I wanted to work on which gave me a lot of flexibility.

Cons

- Big corporate like environment with red tape to get things approved. - Parking is horrendous and costs a lot of money for the close spots - Not much room to give company bonuses or other perks.
