Give you lots of work but little growth and fulfillment of the promises they make.

Pros

They give you lots of work and responsibility from day one. You don't feel like you aren't busy.

Cons

Worked 60 hours a week consecutively and deceptive about how the overtime bonus will play out. They tell you anything to get you in the door about how they will give you the ability to grow in any direction with any skillset you want, but that doesn't happen. They only want you to double down on the skills that you already have and don't alternate workers onto other projects to prevent them from being dissatisfied with their work - even though they claim that they will. Work you 60 hours a week and then say hey it's ok by taking you to happy hour and getting black out drunk. I gained 20 lb from a lack of work/life balance and the constant peer pressure from coworkers to drink. Also they give you laptops that weigh 20 lb. So working from home is a myth. You are just on call 24/7.

A great company to work for

Pros

A lot of growth potential. Junior staff get a lot greater responsibility than they do at other firms. There's also a lot of variety in the work, much more so than at other firms that do government contracting. Lots of smart, friendly staff. Lots of professional development opportunities offered, such as going to training, internal trainings, etc.

Cons

The management of overhead issues like IT and office space leaves something to be desired. Due to the major growth, sometimes projects are understaffed at first, and take a while to get staffed up to an appropriate level. That leads to some late nights, but that's limited.

Good Company, Great People

Pros

I spent about a year at Summit Consulting as a financial analyst. I was exposed to a lot of different projects (mainly federal credit) where I was given tons of responsibility and client exposure. Summit was a great place for me to come in as an entry level employee and learn the foundations of credit, municipal finance, and management consulting. If you are an employee that is entrepreneurial and outgoing, you will have the opportunity to be involved in some interesting projects. However, the culture at Summit is the reason most people stay at the firm and what differentiates it from competitors. Everyone I crossed paths with was great to work with, inviting, and truly happy to be working at Summit, which is hard to find.

Cons

As with any growing firm, there are growing pains. Summit is increasing its hiring of finance individuals as its federal credit practice grows. Summit still sees itself as a data analytics firm and pays like such. For finance professionals, pay is 10%-25% below market, mainly because there is no signing or end of year cash bonus. There are cash awards you can receive at the end of each quarter and OT pay, but that is not a given. Additionally, the structure of the organization can be difficult to navigate. Employees are staffed across different projects led by different individuals. Most of the time your day-to-day manager is not the one deciding your compensation. Finally, there are limited financial opportunities. I had to really fight to get on finance oriented projects because the firm is still growing that book of business.
