Pros

Work environment: - Supportive for learning. Everyone at all levels of experience are learning and sharing something new everyday. A case with uncommon results or conditions is discussed with interest. - Management support. When I have questions or need help, the managers are there to support me. I am accountable for my work but my managers always back me up if my decisions are questioned by clients. When I had made mistakes, I didn't get penalized for owning up to them and correcting my work. My manager comes around to check on everyone individually to see if they are feeling overworked or can take on more work. It helps share the workload and I learn to appreciate us as a team! - Meetings and corporate communication. We have quick twice-weekly meetings that are 15 min long. They can be so quick and short that most of us stand for those meetings. The point of these are to brief interesting cases, update on quotas, and summarize corporate info that's relevant to our team. We also get bi-weekly department meetings for education, direct corporate info, conference calls with other offices etc. - Training. The training was very specialized for my work. We got trained by underwriters who had 15+ years as underwriters. Our work gets audited for the first few months after training because even after 2 straight weeks of class, we can't learn enough to be independent. This was an amazing learning experience because we got a lot of one-on-one training sessions that were specific to our own cases (like the ones I signed off on and actually put my name on). Company Benefits - Group benefits and pensions. These are very good, thorough, and flexible. You should expect this if you work for a company that actually offers these as products. - Education. Reimbursement for education is pretty good. There is a maximum annual amount and dependent on budget restraints, your current performance, timeline, etc. Career prospects - Sun Life encourages employees to seek out job opportunities within the company. The corporate policies focus on the understanding that you may change roles before finding one that fits you. From my experience, our department and managers don't fear change and adjust workload depending on these changes. They understand that they can't control everything and are just good at communicating with us that we will have to temporarily pick up slack or that workload has been spread out due to a new hire. - More career. You can keep an updated electronic employee profile which they search first if a position opens up that matches your skills, career goals, and expectations. Overall working at Sun Life has been a positive experience for me. Because I'm not in department that is restricted to certain hours (customer service for example), I have flexible hours. My manager is fully aware of my career goals and help me find ways to develop skills in preparation for potential promotion or participation in a challenging case. I care about the quality of my work because I am fully accountable and because an underwriter represents the company's risk management decisions...so if I make a mistake with a decision, Sun Life might actually have to follow through with it. The workplace is also very diverse culturally and by gender. This applies to positions of leadership too.

Cons

Work environment: - It's a pretty sedentary job. I sit all day and sometime eat lunch at my desk. It's really important that I walk to and from work and also exercising. - Corporate communication. We get a lot of corporate e-mails regarding internal communication, marketplace updates, changes to related departments, promotions, quarterly earnings, etc. If it's not directly relevant to my work, sometimes I forget to keep up with these. - Training. There are not enough trainers. Sun Life recognizes there is a deficit though, it's just hard to find underwriters who have 10+ years of experience AND are good teachers. Career prospects - Depending on who you are, this may/may not be bad. Sun Life is a global company so a lot of expansion and subsequent career opportunities might be out of town/province/country.
