Pros

You will have many opportunities to positively impact students who truly need your guidance and wisdom within a controlled and collaborative teaching environment. Also, I found my co-tutors friendly, inspiring, and highly competent in their craft.

Cons

Training in my experience was simply a one-time surface-level overview: "Here, do this...this...and this... you're good" and did not utilize Sylvan's robust online training courses nor followed up with any kind of enhanced development to further support staff pedagogy. Compensation from my experience was about one-fourth of an hourly charge to the client. Management style from my experience at the time would vary between laissez-faire, to reactive, fear-based, and assumed the negative about the activities of the staff. Also, as casually as a weather report, a member of the management team would offhandedly reassure me not to fear when they might yell at me sometime during my employment because they do that to all the staff now and then.

Pros

Schedule given in advance, great students, adjustable scheduling based on your needs.

Cons

No flexibility, management was rude, Sylvan often claims they differentiate instruction for their students but all it means is the questions on the iPads are re-worded with new numbers. I saw a student struggling once and got up to get manipulatives and was almost written up because I should have thought of that before the session started. I’d leave every day feeling defeated by their practices and I welcomed by management. I once had a table full of students who were new to Sylvan so I was juggling their competencies and tests, then got in trouble because one was sitting at his table off task while I was working with another one who was previously off task trying to work on their beginning testing which meant no other lessons were available to either child, then management wouldn’t let me explain what was happening; I was always in the wrong. Lack of training.

Pros

Working with at-risk students and helping to close the education gap. Working with like-minded people. Supportive management.

Cons

No raises in pay for 6 years. No reward for achievement. Little or no communication about upcoming work. Little or no background communication about the students we are struggling with.
