Pros

There were no valuable pros in this role other than my own ability to offer the students my personal touch to teaching and development.

Cons

It is with regret that I must say that my experience working for Sylvan of Greater Toronto was nothing short of an experience I could have done without. The business practices that took place behind the scenes were nothing but poor. I only hope that this is a realization the people that own run and manage the organization of 11 centres. The overall morale of those I worked with, was poor at best. The time that was needed to dedicate to the role. was in no way properly compensated monetarily. And if a promise was made, it was rare that it was ever followed though by those that were to put forth the action. I am disappointed in my experience with the Sylvan of GTA, and can only request that those looking for employment with this group of Sylvan Learning Centres, to really give yourself more value to your worth, and look elsewhere - even Sylvan Learning Centres outside of the GTA, but it is highly recommended that the ones within Toronto proper, and just to the north and just to the west be exempt from your search for employment.

No Room for Growth

Pros

Working with kids was a great experience, especially seeing them gain confidence and improve academically.

Cons

Terrible hours, usually 11-7, sometimes 12-8. No room for growth. Once you are a center director, unless you somehow get your foot in the door to corporate, there are no promotions. The job is also very sales driven, pressuring parents to pay an astronomical amount of money for programs their kids don't necessarily need.

Pros

Alright experience if you want to teach eventually, but that is the only reason you would want to work here

Cons

Charge students ridiculous prices, and give tutors the tiniest fraction. Ex: $50/student, 3 students/ tutor; Sylvan makes $150, tutor gets $15 They would cancel shifts the same day. You make plans around your work schedule only to have work cancelled 3 hours before your start. They accept students even if they don't have a tutor qualified to help them. I was hired for a science tutoring position and several of my students were paying for and attending sessions for weeks before I got there, without anyone that could really help them.
