Pros

Programme works so well and it is truly rewarding to watch children overcome their educational challenges. The hours are flexible. The salary matched the classroom and the benefit package was the same as the school board.

Cons

I had to work weekends. I found it difficult to put a price on education. However, I can't work for free, nor can everyone else but still I'm not accustomed to that notion.

Pros

Working for Sylvan Learning Centers is generally satifying. Adequate training for teachers is provided prior to working with students. In addition to management training, teachers observe experienced Sylvan instructors and work slowly into management the max of 3 students per hour. In my experience management is flexible to accomodate personal business when necessary.

Cons

The hourly compensation for new teachers is fairly low for licensed education professional. To my knowledge, only currently certified teachers are employed by Sylvan Learning Centers. Many of these employees have many years of experience and/or graduate degrees. This position is great to earn extra income, but it is not a position that could serve as primary employment.

Pros

I could determine my own days of work and hours. In my situation, I was able to negotiate some flexibility in how I worked with students.

Cons

Variability in quality of the people running each center, because the centers are franchises. For most employees, the pay is fairly low, and (at least as I worked things out) I was working part time and did not receive any benefits.
