High Stress, NOT enough time

Pros

I like how structured the learning is, with a plan for learning all these different skills

Cons

Working with four students at once when all of them need help is extremely hard. Often times you just don't have the time these kids need. A lot of these kids need one-on-one tutoring/teaching and handing them an iPad and expecting them to learn doesn't work with nearly as many kids as it should

Pros

I enjoyed working with the students

Cons

My salary wasn’t much more than minimum wage with promises it would go up as well as promotions. Never happened. Owner/director has no education background and I felt uncomfortable as she spoke to parents as an expert. I felt uncomfortable that owner/director could not do any of the teaching. This program is too expensive for a “canned” program. The owner/director was only looking at making money by trying to charge people the most while paying me the least and expecting me to work off the clock. She hired 2 teachers and we both quit within 3 months.

Sylvan Tutoring

Pros

Good hourly pay, flexible part time hours, students are ready to work, students skills are assessed upon entry, students earn points that can be translated into prizes or gift cards.

Cons

Sylvan offers a system oriented teaching method, with predetermined lessons. Students must pass each level via a post test - with 80% accuracy, and supposedly no help. Yet many tutors help students with the tests, especially if the student is ready for the next lesson. Tests are much too long, assessment can be shorter. Tutors are to spend only 15 mins a session on HW, yet most students want HW help beyond 15 mins. Tutors work with special needs students without reviewing their IEP. Sites are disorganized with student files in disarray, pencils, graph/scratch paper missing. Tutors are asked to work with 2 or 3 students at a time.
