TIAA-CREF

Pros

The pay is well above average compared to similar jobs. The employer contributions are well above average (currently 11.5%). The time off (when you can get it) is very nice, 23 days of sick/vacation pay per year.

Cons

Upper management is totally inept. It is like working for the government sometimes with all of the beaurocracy at TIAA-CREF. They are constantly behind the eight ball with regard to staffing needs and they push their employees beyond the breaking point but don't take the time to say thank you... I hate to whine like this but unless you are in upper management where everything smells like roses the place sucks to work at.

Too many chiefs and box checkers

Pros

The mission is great and I think there are some people who believe in it. There are a lot of great people who work at the company.

Cons

The politics are terrible. There is a complete inability to make decisions. Everything is done for the purposes of checking boxes and covering rear ends. There are too many expensive chiefs being hired but nothing ever seems to get done. Senior management is constantly changing its mind and this is reflected in its decision to do everything and be everything to everyone. The Alternative Work Strategy (i.e. forced telecommuting) is not a good idea.

Pros

Was once a nice company to work for. There is a hope that one day things will be better. The retirement benefit was better earlier but company has reduced that last year.

Cons

high politics, unaccountable and incompetent management, environment promoting carrier growth and employee development lacking, increasing unfairness and groupisum, top heavy and disorderly organization structure where there is no clear accountability
