Nurses Here Need to Unionize

Pros

Develop good camaraderie if you have nurses on the unit who value teamwork, and I loved all my patients. It truly is a gift to be able to help them during the worst parts of their lives.

Cons

John Couris believes that the pay for the largest workforce in for this hospital, which the hospital would be unable to function without, is fair "within the local market" because we are a Level I trauma center and the "prestige" of that on our resume has inherent value. However, I argue that the prestige of that does not pay the bills. Many of my colleagues live paycheck to paycheck and have to take on second jobs to be able to afford living in Tampa, others live an hour or more away and drive in. Additionally, because we are designated as a Level I trauma center, we take on the most acute patients possible and in turn the work load is heavier regardless if you are a nurse in the ER, ICU or med-surg. In the past year or so, colleagues from the observation unit have informed us that they have changed their parameters for what patients they can take down there where resources are extremely limited and have turned into the "inpatient transition" unit. So, the nurses here get paid less than our coworkers in the area by far, are denied raises, and have the heaviest workload in the area. TGH nurses should heavily consider looking to our nurses in NY as an example towards UNIONIZING for better compensation and work environment.

We take great pride in fostering an inclusive culture, which is why we regularly review all positions across the system—clinical, clinical support, and non-clinical—to ensure competitive pay, because we believe that every team member plays a critical role in our patients’ care. Over the last 3 years, those adjustments have resulted in more than $127M in investments. In February of this year, we invested an additional $7.2M in bedside nurses at our TGH Davis Islands location. Nurses in that location also have the opportunity to earn an additional 16% through our clinical ladder. Lastly, our benefits are robust and team members at Davis Islands pay less than 15% in premiums, compared to the national average of 20%.
