Chief HR Officer reading from a script in global town hall

Pros

The people are great! However, with what is going on I am not sure how many of the current amazing coworkers will stay short-term.

Cons

Another round of layoffs took place recently. As always it was communicated in the worst possible way. An email in the morning of The Day, giving a heads-up. A town hall zoom call the day after, in which the co CEO was giggling, smiling and acting with a deep lack of empathy. His answers to the questions were very evasive and empty. A week later, second town hall. This one to announce that they want us to go 3 times a week back to the offices. The Chief HR Officer, part of the executive team who mastered the layoffs and previous rapid hiring, had to communicate the news. They seem to have thought it was suitable to write a script and read it our loud like an amateur actress in her first semester at drama school. How sad. You have to be very blind to go on the record, on a zoom call (recorded), to talk about company culture, why being one extra day in the office is so meaningful, and decide to READ the whole thing. Someone wrote the script for her, obviously, she did not manage to rewrite it and make it her own.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We agree the people at Outbrain are great. Regarding recent employee departures, as mentioned in our communication to employees, headcount reductions are the most difficult decisions we need to make as a business. Many of those leaving are close friends and colleagues who have made immense contributions to Outbrain during their time with us. We aimed to communicate this in the best way possible, both for those directly and indirectly affected. Despite the difficult circumstances, we did receive positive feedback about the process - highlighting specifically the transparency, empathy, and the overall fairness in which it was conducted and communicated. To your feedback regarding the Town Hall meeting and the announcement about moving to three days in the office, we aimed to communicate this change accurately and thoroughly. There was a lot of information to share, and we wanted to convey the importance of the topic - we did not intend for the delivery to come off as inauthentic. We believe the one extra day in the office is very important for our culture, innovation and collaboration - we would not be doing it otherwise. We have shared your feedback directly with our Chief People Officer, and she will take this feedback onboard for the future. Our responsibility to motivate and inspire is very important to us, and we will continue to work on this.
