Pros

Fancy swag, pretty locations, and photoshoots every couple of months for employees. Some tools that Tend uses are really high-tech and fancy, but there are other areas where Tend still really lacks.

Cons

It's hard to even think of where to begin. The corporate team (called the "hub") is full of people anxious about losing their jobs, or incredibly gossipy wannabe girlbosses. The NYC team only spends a few days in the office during the week right now, but I dread the days I have to go in. It's dead silent in the office and the only time you hear people talking is when they are trashing employees that aren't currently in the office. The dynamic between the Nashville and NYC teams is also both awkward and toxic. I've been on conference calls with Nashville leadership where my colleagues in NYC turned bright pink in the middle of the call from getting yelled at for things out of their control. You shouldn't be making your team break out in hives over an unpredictable error. Diversity is a clear issue with hub employees. It was a bit of an adjustment when I first started at Tend and realized that every single person there looks the same. NYC is so diverse, so I find this inexcusable. The pay and benefits at Tend are very low. I have a feeling they base their NYC employees off of Nashville salaries. The healthcare costs are extraordinarily high for a start-up in healthcare. A lot of people are given inflated titles (ex. Manager title but not managing anyone. Directors are really the equivalent of Managers). Tend is planning a lot of growth outside of NYC and based on the salaries of people on my team, I wouldn't be surprised if they replaced us with people from a cheaper city in the future. Tend's primary market right now is NYC, but this company is merely a leech to the city. Turnover is incredibly high at Tend. It's not uncommon for people to just walk off the job in the first few weeks, but management also fires people like crazy. Tend will sell you these dreams of growth and opportunity, but the reality is that a lot of people don't make it past six months. I'm also not aware of any real opportunity for career growth here. People just magically get promotions handed to them, but there isn't much of a way to explore new career paths or express that you want to grow. This is a place you go for a job, not a career.

Experience at tend

Pros

The hourly pay is generous

Cons

THE PAY IS NOT WORTH IT. Hour back to back new patients… while expected to preform srp/ gingival scalings in the same appointment. There is a reason they are always looking for hygienists.

coming up short

Pros

The clinical teams are fantastic. They show up everyday to provide a great patient experience I have met some of the most talented people in the industry at tend. Having been in the industry for a while, it is very apparent that there was time spent in hiring a few people that are employed at tend. For this i am very thankful.

Cons

Employee morale...its poor. There has always been this idea that tend provides more for their employees than the typical dental practice and I have yet to see this. The only people who receive bonuses are dentists and studio managers so if you're a hard working hygienist or assistant who plans to join tend ( OR one of the very few good ones still employed at tend) then don't expect anything additional for busting your bum. Announcing at morning huddles that you wont be receiving a merit raise if you received a market increase is not really the best way to increase employee morale. A raise for being an outstanding employee is a little different than a raise because of recent inflation. Policies and procedures....just extra paperwork: Instead of implementing new processes and procedures there should be a way to master the ones already put into place. Spend less time creating new STUFF and more time developing the very inexperienced set of teams you've hired. You cannot "do dental differently" if you aren't doing ANYTHING different. Where is the quality control? Where is the training, development AND FOLLOW UP? theres just a bunch of paperwork with how things should be done sitting around in a google drive and nobody to implement and follow up on it. Poor use of talented employees...grow from within: I mentioned one of the pros of working at tend is the talent but it is very poorly utilized. A change in leadership could be very beneficial in seeing that you're poorly utilizing some of the best talent in the industry. Some of the people in higher positions dont do a great job of putting their emotions to the side when working. the schedule: the schedule doesnt benefit anybody. provide outstanding service and it wont matter what the hours of operation are, the patients will come. but this wont be achieved until better recruiting and training and development are developed.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. We are glad to hear how much you enjoy working alongside a team of skilled clinicians. We strive to create studio environments that fosters growth and collaboration among our team, and enjoy hearing that you have found value in that. We value all employee feedback, and apologize for coming up short. As a young organization, we know how important it is for us to consistently listen and continue improving our employee experience. We enjoy celebrating our employees accomplishments and have many opportunities for employees to advance with the company offering elevated roles for experienced hygienists and dentists. Additionally, internal training and career development are a key focus of ours. We are excited to offer new courses on TendU, our internal learning platform, later this year which will increase our team's access to resources to grow clinical and professional skill sets. Our studios are open longer hours and weekends in order to best accommodate the needs of our members. Employees work varying shifts and we are transparent about this throughout the interview and onboarding process. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us and hope to do right by you in the future. If you’re interested in continuing the dialogue, please reach out directly to people@hellotend.com, or via AllVoices, our anonymous internal hotline.
