Pros

The work environment is supportive and collaborative. Everyone identifies with the mission and has a shared purpose for coming to work every day. It is a unique opportunity to experience this.

Cons

The workload can sometimes demand more of your time. This is to be expected in most work environments. It does have a corporate feel, so it's important to know if that will work for you or not. There is limited growth for junior staff to move up to more senior positions.

Charitable foundation with a corporate atmosphere

Pros

TBF is filled with highly passionate people who want to make a difference. While many of the lower-level employees have spent most of their careers in the social sector, much of the upper management has come from corporate, so the Foundation has a distinctly corporate feel. Senior staff is accessible.

Cons

There was quite a bit of turnover during my time at TBF, so I did't find the sense of community I expected.

Pros

Staff was very friendly and everyone was respected regardless of their duties. Regular reviews were conducted by managers in order to help employees improve their performance. The Program Officers were extremely knowledgeable, sharp and had strong relationships within the community.

Cons

Communication was sometimes problematic especially when a major decision was made to take the organization in a different direction. This caused moral to suffer and led to an exodus of talented employees. You can learn a lot about the nonprofit community and philanthropy but there is very little room for advancement beyond the role that you are hired for.
