Pros

The Graduate Assistant program is excellent. Your housing, insurance and graduate studies are paid for, plus you get a decent stipend for working 40 hours a week. If you're not a graduate assistant, and have working experience, the compensation is not worth it.

Cons

If you are Black/African American at the company you are treated different from your white counterparts. Many feedback meeting will include historical remarks including: lack of professionalism, too loud, unapproachable, don't fit in with the company's culture (which is very white) and the behavior management approach is different. Most meeting will not produce any examples except for stereotypes and assumptions that the staff already has about working with black people. Ironically, many black people come to the company with more experience than their white employees and get the same compensation regardless of their experience. White fragility stands out at the company, like no other, and if you're black with more experience than the people on your team, you'll be targeted even more. Although NECC hires a diverse group of employees, there is no anti racism training or leadership training that help managers interact with a diverse group of staff, making minorities at the company very vulnerable.

I'm truly sorry to read about your experience. NECC values diversity and does not tolerate harassment of any kind and we are truly saddened you have been made to feel this way. Keeping a safe and respectful workplace where you feel valued, confident, and where you can grow and make a difference is very important to us. Part of NECC's core values include a commitment to professional development and to constant improvement. We review employee interaction with students and other staff and provide training and support to ensure staff are acting in accordance with NECC's culture of professionalism and respect. You provided excellent advice and we are glad to report that our trainings already include Harassment Prevention Training for Supervisors, to which we recently added a topic on microaggressions, and how microaggressions can unintentionally be hurtful to others. We have also hired a consulting firm to lead focus groups and assess NECC's Diversity & Inclusion policy. We plan to have additional trainings on D & I going forward. As for salary, the starting salary is the same for all Level 2 Teachers, but additional compensation is provided for those working residential and ITT, those with a master's in a field related to the position, and those with prior experience working in direct care using ABA. We expect the best from our staff so that we can provide the best to our students. We will continue to improve our workplace culture through ongoing discussion and development, while incorporating feedback from our staff, like you, who share problems when they see them. - Cathy Welch, Executive Director - Southborough

Fairness? What's That?

Pros

Some of the people who work at the New England Center for Children are good people, so there is that.

Cons

My day coordinator was so unfair. If I did something, she would give me corrective feedback. If someone else would do the exact same thing, she would not say a single word. Other people could get away with just about anything, and my day coordinator would let it slide. For every little thing she was on my case about, everyone else would do multiple times. I would receive contradictory advice from different people on how to handle a situation. The senior teachers should realize new staff are not as experienced and also realize the senior staff themselves were new at one point. Some people act like they know everything.

Pros

Gain experience Cheap grad program Good for graduates with no to very little student loans.

Cons

Tough to get employee housing -was told to sleep on air mattress for a month until they were able to find a room. You room with usually 4 people and two bathrooms. Rent around the area is between $1200-$2000 for a 1-2 bedroom and good luck finding a roommate, the employee housing list is a joke. If you plan on living far away, BAD IDEA. After the record snow fall, you best live 10 minutes away. Also, with night hours at the homes, you don't want to be traveling at night, an hour away. If you are from out of state, Boston's roads are horrible and you have to exit to get to the other side of the road, there are no such things as left turns. Also, toll ways are $$$$$. HR is a nightmare. I tried contacting HR through e-mail and telephone and never had a phone call returned. Never got reimbursed for travel. If you plan to move to Boston, do your research!! It is called Taxachusetts for a reason. You have to change your license, registration, and car insurance. Was told by HR that I didn't have to change registration which is a big lie and against MA law. Health insurance was pretty high ($2k for the year) They try to get you to go to the intensive program which is more money but don't be fooled, concussions are made there. The room is a really sad area where iPads are placed in thick, wood cases bolted to the table, students are listless on the floor, and are in separate rooms. Staff wear thick denim jackets and pants to protect themselves from scratches. They also wear helmets to protect themselves. Graduate school is based on if you are admitted and employment is contingent that you go to graduate school. It is expected that you apply. The Behavior Analyst Program was more than 3 years which may be too much time to commit for some. Graduate school is not free but a percentage is paid and if you quit while at school, you have to pay back the money that NECC paid towards your education. Fair. Overall, I did my research and found that after taxes, with a salary of 32k, I would be only earning around $23k. Plus with rent being $1000/person (found a roommate), I only had $11k left and with student loans, car insurance payments, utilities, health insurance, food, gas, and other life expenses, I would be broke. So do your research!
