Pros

Scripps is a friendly, non-stressful work environment. The people are nice and down to earth. Middle management generally has a very good working relationship with subordinates (I never actually feel like a subordinate, but more like a team member). The campus atmosphere is casual but stimulating. And the folks that run the individual labs are brilliant.

Cons

Because Scripps is a not for profit and funding is based on what the investigators bring in, salaries may be a bit lower than industry. Also, with funding cuts across the board, sometimes it can be scary not knowing if your postition/lab/investigator will be funded in the next cycle. With future funding always a question, people get jumpy at the end of a funding cycle.

Pros

Scripps has a relaxed working environment, and an open and academic culture, where ideas and abilities are openly shared. Scripps being a research institute, that houses many different laboratories results in a dynamic institution with research on going in many different fields, results in the opportunity to learn, and expand your expertise.

Cons

Scripps, because it is a nonprofit research institute, it seams that the pay scale is less that it would be at a company, and because it houses individual laboratories, your ability for upward mobility is limited.

Pros

The name and the science there. People work with Scripps are mostly postdoc, after your postdoc training there, it is relatively easier to find a job than other university or research insitute. La Jolla/San Diego is a good place to live, constant weather, tons of entertainment around.

Cons

Rather expensive place to live. Housing and food are generally higher than other states. The salary depends on which professor you work with, sometimes, the pay is too low that you can barely lived in La Jolla. Scripps only sponsor J-1 visa for postdoc, which is not as flexible as a H-1 visa.
